Research Computing Resources
Research Computing Resources
UVM researchers have access to a wide range of compute resources and services. This includes research-focused software, training, and support. The table below outlines the available tools and services designed to advance research across disciplines.
Computing Resources for UVM Researchers
Body
Plan & Design
Resource | Description |
---|
AppsAnywhere | UVM Software Portal |
Cisco AnyConnect VPN | UVM’s Virtual Private Network service allows remote users with UVM credentials to securely access resources that are normally only available to on-campus users. |
Data Classification Matrix | classified information assets into risk-based categories for the purpose of determining who is allowed to access the information and what security precautions must be taken to protect it against unauthorized access. |
Data Management Plan DMP Tool | DMPTool is a free service that helps researchers and institutions to create, review, and share high-quality data management plans that meet institutional and funder requirements. DMPTool also compiles up-to-date funder requirements from large grant-awarding organizations and federal agencies. |
EPIC Self-Service Analytics | UVM Health Network based data tools for working with PHI in the covered entity for research. Data must remain at the health network while accessing these data tools. Access to tools requires a hospital login and password. Access to content is granted based upon user roles. |
OnCore | OnCore is an advanced Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS) that aims to transform the management of clinical research studies. By integrating this tool at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and the UVM Health Network, we are making advancements in enhancing our research capabilities and impact. |
ORCID Account/Institutional Connection | ID tag that is manditory for grants. ORCID iDs are a critical part of the university’s efforts to comply with the National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) and the implementation guidance issued by the Office of Science and Technology (OSTP), Enterprise Technology Services created an integration for UVM’s institutional ORCID account to connect to individual researcher ORCID accounts. This institutional connection will be required of a researcher applying for federal funding as federal agencies begin requiring persistent identifiers into the disclosure process, bolstering research security and integrity while reducing administrative burden. |
UVMClick | UVM researchers and administrators manage the lifecycle of IRB Protocols, IACUC Protocols, IBC Registrations, COI Disclosures, Proposal Submissions, Awards and Agreements. Each module has specific User Guides for researchers to follow for step-by-step directions on using the UVMClick software. |
Collect & Create

Overleaf | Overleaf is designed to make the process of writing, editing and producing your research papers and project reports much quicker for both you and your collaborators. Overleaf can also be linked to other services to best fit into your workflow. |
Qualtrics | A web-based survey tool. Qualtrics allows users to quickly create, distribute, and analyze surveys – from basic to very complex – with no previous experience and little time to learn. Frequently used in part for creating IRB approved surveys for human subject research. |
REDCap | Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) for electronic collection and management of research and clinical trial data. This is available to researchers at UVM for research, quality improvement, or operational support. REDCap is a free and secure web-based application for building and managing online surveys, electronic consent forms and electronic data capture for research purposes. |
Analyze & Collaborate
Resource | Details |
---|
ArcGIS | is a geographic information systems (GIS) framework for gathering, managing, analyzing, and mapping geospatial data. |
Data Consulting Services | UVM Libraries offers consulting sevices in GIS project design, data vizualization, statistical planning and analysis (students and staff only), software support, and data management planning. |
Center for Multimedia Development | Located in Howe Library, the CMD offers high powered Mac and PC computers capable of running ArcGIS, data visualization applications, statistical software, the Adobe Creative Cloud, digital humanities project creation, virtual reality, 3D modeling applications, and more. |
GeoSpatial services | Geospatial technologies provide new and evolving expertise for addressing the major challenges of our time by transforming data into geographically referenced information. UVM is a leader in the use of geospatial technologies in teaching and research. |
Gitlab | GitLab is a web-based version control and collaboration platform that allows researchers to manage code, track changes, and collaborate on software development or data analysis projects. It supports reproducible research by providing tools for versioning, issue tracking, and continuous integration. |
Globus (data transfer service) | Globus is a web-based data management tool that enables researchers to easily share and receive large data sets with collaborators from other institutions. |
MS Teams: Team Groups, Chat, Video Conferencing | Microsoft Teams is a collaborative communications platform that incorporates a persistent chat, video calls/meetings, and file sharing (including collaborative editing of documents). |
OneDrive | data storage, coded data only. OneDrive is recommended for research data that is intended for simultaneous collaboration (co-editing Word documents, etc.) or for data that needs to be shared with external users. Large data sets are not recommended to be stored in OneDrive. |
Open On Demand (OOD) | Open OnDemand (OOD) is a web interface to the VACC clusters. |
Research Computing | Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) and the Vermont Advanced Computing Center (VACC) provide support to all researchers at UVM including both infrastructure support and user support. Hundreds of researchers across UVM use ETS services to enhance both their research and classroom learning. |
Research Virtual Machines | These are high-end research workstations running in UVM’s private cloud. Useful for storing, transferring, and processing data. Coded data only. |
UVM File Transfer | This service can be used to send files from or to a UVM affiliate. |
VACC HPC Services | The Vermont Advanced Computing Center (VACC) is a research facility offering computing services to UVM faculty, staff and students. Our high-performance computing (HPC) clusters support large-scale computation, low-latency networking for MPI workloads, and high-throughput AI and machine learning workflows. |
Virtual Café Office Hours | The ETS Research Computing Team hosts drop-in Research Computing Virtual Café hours for assistance and open discussion about research computing tools and services — no registration required. |
