Experiential Education by the Numbers

Learning by doing is core to learning at UVM.

Body

There are many ways to engage in experiential learning at UVM, making it exciting to do, but difficult to track.  For instance, we don't track all the students who do not-for-credit internships.

We thus capture here only part of the story, but it provides a good sense of how frequently Catamounts are learning by doing. Including, of course, the High Impact Practices all first year students benefit from in their Residential Learning Communities.

UVM's landscape of experiential learning is rich and, in many ways, defies labeling.  A course, for example, that employs service-learning pedagogy abroad is both a "Community-Engaged" and a "Travel Study" course.  Such opportunities provide profound learning experiences for our students and wonderfully positive impacts on communities across the globe - but it they don't fit our boxes very well.  To not loose this richness, there are duplicate counts in the chart below.  And, to offer you an accurate account of experiential learning, we balance this with the total number of de-duplicated students in the "tally" row at the bottom of each column.
