It takes a village...
It takes a village.
As a faculty member, advisor, or department chair you play an important role in helping students make decisions about their academic and career paths. Students know you, and often aspire to advance in your field - so they hope (and often expect) to receive career guidance from you.
You don't have to be a career counselor to help - we're here to help you feel prepared to offer appropriate supports and referrals. Together we can meet the students where they're at and prompt them to continue on a productive path toward career-readiness.
If you don't see what you need below, please let us know career@uvm.edu.
New Assessment Tool
UVM has partnered with Career Launch to make NACE Career Readiness Inventory available to all students at UVM. Students can access the tool via SSO and can take it any time to self-assess their competency on the "NACE8" (the 8 most sought-after skills in recruiting). Self-assessment is an impactful way for students to develop their self-awareness and set professional development goals. But what makes the inventory most impactful is that supervisors can also use the tool to provide feedback to students on their performance.
Thus, the tool is ideal for experiential learning opportunities (e.g., internships, co-op, service-learning, research, on-campus employment) where a student can be asked to take the self-assessment AND their supervisor can do it also.
Additionally, when used in a work-learning experience, any competency rated as "Advanced" by the supervisor will automatically generate a LinkedIn badge - backed by NACE and specific to that competency; helping the student amplify their skills to potential employers.
To learn more and/or set up an instance of the Career Readiness Inventory for your course, program, or cohort reach out to career@uvm.edu. We welcome creative used of the inventory!
Employers on Campus
Bringing employers on campus as part of your class or event?
Wonderful - this is a great way to support the career readiness of our students and engage the community beyond UVM! Remember that the Career Center is here to support such efforts, and please be sure to follow UVM's Recruiting Guidelines.
Oh, and don't forget to tell them about our Employer Partner Program - they may be interested in deepening their relationship with the university and we've got some great resources to help them to just that.
