Professor, John. L Beckley Professorship

David A. Jones is a Professor of Management who holds the John L. Beckley Professorship.  He joined UVM in 2004 after completing his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at The University of Calgary.

Professor Jones is a passionate educator who was honored to receive a University-wide teaching award (the 2009 Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award).  He served as Director (2015-2018) and Academic Director (2019) of The Sustainable Innovation MBA—the #1 ranked “Green MBA” in the U.S. for three consecutive years (Princeton Review, 2018-2020).  David teaches MBA courses on Teamwork & Collaboration for Sustained Innovation and From CSR to Creating Sustainable Shared Value, and an undergraduate course on Leadership and Organizational Behavior.  He also regularly delivers full-day training seminars in leadership and teamwork, and has trained over a thousand executives and managers in Vermont alone.

In his work with organizations, Professor Jones applies evidenced-based principles of sustainable business strategy, triple bottom line thinking, and organizational behavior to create shared value through practices that contribute to organizational objectives while having positive impact on stakeholders.  For instance, David has worked with companies to create or enhance their corporate volunteerism programs, and assess employees’ subsequent engagement in community service, skill development, and responses through various job attitudes, performance-oriented behaviors, and retention.  David also served as Chair of the Board for a non-profit organization called the New Sudan Education Initiative whose mission was to build secondary schools in South Sudan.

As a scholar, Professor Jones is a recognized thought leader in the emerging area of employee and job seeker responses to socially and environmentally sustainable business practices.  His work in this area includes empirical studies, theory development, and literature reviews in published articles and book chapters; two co-edited journal issues and a co-edited volume; and key note addresses and visiting scholar presentations in countries near and far, such as Australia and Pakistan.  David’s broader program of research includes studies of employee recruitment and retention, and responses to perceptions of fair and unfair treatment at work.  Professor Jones has authored and delivered over 100 presentations at scholarly conferences, and published over 40 journal articles, book chapters, and conference proceeding papers, including articles in leading academic journals like the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Applied Psychology.  David has served on the editorial boards of five peer-reviewed journals, including two highly-regarded journals in which he has also published his work: The Journal of Management where he currently serves on the editorial board, and the Journal of Organizational Behavior where he currently serves as an Associate Editor.
