Ikigai & The Politics of Career Choice
Chittenden Bank Room (413) | Pillar 1: Prepare Students to Navigate Life Beyond UVM
Career choices are loaded—even in the best of times, which these are not. Identity, values, family expectations, labor market narratives, and societal norms all shape what students perceive as possible, realistic, and desirable.
Join Career Center staff to tango with this complexity through the Japanese concept of ikigai—often described as a “reason for being” that lives at the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Used as a reflective lens, ikigai helps illuminate tensions alongside curiosity and hope. Leave this session with some fresh thoughts on how you can help students prepare to navigate a chaotic world post-graduation with authenticity and agency.
