In an op-ed published in the New York Times, UVM’s Joe Roman argues in favor of the Endangered Species Act – and against some of the changes proposed by the Trump Administration.

A bill proposed by Senator John Barrasso would promote state control over management of endangered species, a move which Roman argues would ultimately harm vulnerable populations.

Using the endangered monarch butterfly as an example, Roman argues that the bill would require the federal government to “consult with every governor, state agency, and county across the butterfly’s 49-state range in developing a recovery plan.”

“It would be the death of the monarch’s recovery by a thousand bureaucratic cuts,” says Roman, a Fellow of the Gund Institute for the Environment.

Roman’s work has also been featured recently in Scientific American, Miami Herald, and The Cape Cod Chronicle.
