The Gund Institute, supported bythe Mayo-Smith Family Research Award Endowment, offers undergraduate students exciting opportunities to participate in faculty research, conduct thesis projects, attend events and learn from visiting scholars.

Gund Undergraduate Research Awards

Each summer, Gund Undergraduate Research Awards supports environmental research by UVM undergrads in partnership with the Office of Fellowships, Opportunities and Undergraduate Research's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) Program.

The Gund Institute will co-fund at least two $5,000 undergraduate research scholarships for Summer 2023.

Students must be supervised by at least one Gund Fellow, or UVM-based Gund Affiliate. They present their research at the UVM Student Research Conference the following Spring.

Benefits and Responsibilities

Gund undergraduate research scholars:

  • Are supervised by at least one Gund Fellow (faculty, PhD or postdoc) or UVM Affiliate.
  • Complete the research in the same year in which they applied.
  • Participate in Gund activities and events during the year of their research.
  • Get access to deskspace and wifi at Farrell Hall over the summer of their project.
  • Can request travel support from the Gund if accepted to present their research at a conference.
  • Should acknowledge Gund financial support in all resulting presentations and publications.
