What’s the fastest way for UVM environmental scholars to find new collaborators? The Gund Research Slam.

The Gund Research Slam will showcase exciting environmental research projects from across UVM – and highlight opportunities for collaboration. Think of it as speed-dating for scholars. 

The event, hosted by UVM’s Gund Institute for Environment, will occur April 20 from 1-5 p.m. at the new Alumni House Silver Pavilion. RSVP to attend. 

More than 20 presenters from across the University will share new interdisciplinary research in four-minute, rapid-fire presentations. Several networking sessions will give attendees opportunities to explore new collaborations. UVM President Tom Sullivan will deliver opening remarks.

“The Gund Research Slam is designed to help catalyze research and collaboration at UVM across disciplines and departments,” says Prof. Taylor Ricketts, director of the Gund Institute for Environment.  

“There is exciting environmental scholarship happening all over UVM,” adds Ricketts. “But, it can be hard to know what everyone is working on – so opportunities to collaborate can pass us by. This event will help address that in a fun, efficient way.”

Presentations will cover a wide range of topics, including strategies to reduce phosphorus in Lake Champlain, new data on the psychology of environmental decision-making, the impacts of climate change on farming, surprising new connections between human health and nature – and many more.

Why the focus on interdisciplinary collaboration? Ricketts puts it this way: “The great environmental challenges we face are complex and span traditional disciplines. Solving them will require tighter collaboration,” he says. “Solutions need to be cross-cutting as the issues themselves.”
