From saving the new American Whale species to underwater noise pollution, Gund Fellow Joe Roman has provided expert commentary in the New York Times, Associated Press, and other leading media outlets.
In an op-ed for the New York Times, Roman called for action to protect a critically endangered whale species found only in the Gulf of Mexico.
“With a population of just 50 or so, all in the United States,” Roman wrote, “the whale’s fate rests entirely in America’s hands.”
Roman was also featured in an Associated Press story — picked up widely — on new research which found that humans are making the ocean a noisy place – and marine life may suffer for it.
“Imagine having to raise your kids in a place that’s noisy all the time,” said Roman, who was interviewed for the article. “It’s no wonder many marine animals are showing elevated and detectable levels of stress due to the noise.”
Finally, how should humans combat invasive species? An article in T: The New York Times Magazine highlights Roman’s website “Eat the Invaders,” which seeks to combat the spread of predators by putting them on the menu, as one possible solution.
