Participants in UVM's first annual Hackathon joined forces with their peers to create teams of two to six people and take on one of four programming challenges. The problems included Bus Signage, Programming Language Learning Tool, Outdoors App, and Phishing Emails Prevention. Organized by CS Crew, SWiCS and sponsored by the Computer Science Department, OnLogic, and UVM MOVE, the Hackathon teams worked from 9 am to 4:30 pm in Innovation on Saturday, April 13th with assistance from mentors from Beta Technologies (Jayce Slesar, UVM '22), OnLogic (Jacob Bennett), Coinbase (Anika Hamby, UVM '23), and RTX (Delaney Sullivan, UVM '21).

 

The Challenges:

Bus Signage Around Campus with UVM MOVE

Winning Team: C-creatures with Elias Malloy, Rustum Zia, and Felix Walberg

•    This is a collaboration with UVM MOVE.
•    Produce a web app to be displayed on large screens around campus that provides a live city bus schedule for stops closest to where the screen is located (i.e. Davis Center).
•    Shows when the next Green Mountain Transit bus is coming
•    Bonus to add support for the UVM CatBus
•    Bonus to add support for multiple locations like Innovation or L/L
•    Prize: $150 UVM Bookstore gift card and a $30 gift card to the Skinny Pancake

 


Programming Language Learning Tool

Winning Team: Infinite Loop: Team 2 with  Zoe Bell, Lily Bonds, James LeMahieu, and Darby Lane

•    Create a tool to help with learning some programming language
•    Could be done with a GUI or on command line
•    Creatively flexible on how feedback is given
•    Prize: $150 UVM Bookstore gift card and a $30 gift card to Leonardo's

 


Outdoors App

 Winning Team: Ei Team with Mikey Hayes, Shiloh Chiu, Purva Shirolkar, Thomas Wilson, and Emily Sturgill

•    Develop an app (mobile or web) to solve an issue involving the outdoors that affects UVM students the most
•    Prize: $150 UVM Bookstore gift card and a $30 gift card to Leonardo's

 


Phishing Emails

Winning Team: 0x45 with Eric Edlund and Alex Schaefer

•    Create something to help people impacted by campus wide phishing emails 
•    Prize: $150 UVM Bookstore gift card and a $30 gift card to Leonardo's
