Dr. Trishnee Bhurosy is an Assistant Professor of Nutrition at the University of Vermont (UVM) and an Associate Member of the UVM Cancer Center. Dr. Bhurosy is a behavioral scientist with a research focus on improving nutrition equity and food security by addressing the behavioral and social determinants of nutrition behaviors underlying chronic conditions such as cancer. She has specific interests in better understanding how mobile technology and the active engagement of community stakeholders can be leveraged in nutritional interventions. Her scholarly work has been published in flagship journals of nutrition education and behavior and behavioral medicine. In her previous full-time faculty position at Hofstra University, she led the creation and implementation of a satellite food pantry, the Dome Pride Pantry, that serves students, faculty, and staff in an area of campus with limited access to food.
Prior to being in the United States, Dr. Bhurosy worked in community outreach in her home country of Mauritius. There she worked to improve access to local fruits and vegetables among individuals at risk for food insecurity and taught nutrition classes at the University of Mauritius. Throughout her career, drawing upon her experiences as an international female scholar of color and first-generation student, Dr. Bhurosy has created and continues to foster inclusive mentoring opportunities for students of all backgrounds and space spaces for other women of color and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). In 2019, she received the Martin Luther King Building Bridges Award for her work in improving the communities around her; in 2021, she was chosen for the Society of Behavioral Medicine Diversity Institute for Emerging Leaders. Dr. Bhurosy has successfully taught at several universities in the United States and actively integrates applied learning opportunities in all her classes through service-learning, reflective exercises, and other activities.
