Mapping Your Global Experiences as a Business Major
We generally recommend studying abroad after you have completed the majority of your Business Core and Business Field courses. Students studying abroad for a semester tend to do so in fall or spring of junior year. We recommend working with your academic advisor to determine the best timing for you, as this can depend on the student.
Program Types
UVM GO Pre-Orientation Program
UVM GO is a pre-orientation program for incoming first-year students that focuses on global learning, developing intercultural knowledge and skills, and building community. Each experience allows students to develop their awareness of global issues and make connections in their community and beyond.
Semester or Year Study Abroad
Students can spend a semester or an academic year studying abroad. Browse the Office of International Education’s website to decide which destination and program type best aligns with your financial, academic, and personal goals.
Travel Study (UVM-Faculty-Led Program)
Travel Study programs, or UVM Faculty-Led Programs, are offered during winter break, spring break, and summer terms. These programs give students the opportunity to earn 1-4 UVM credits in programs ranging from one to six weeks. Each academic year, UVM runs between 15-25 travel study programs.
Internships Abroad
Students may participate in internships abroad for credit, or students may pursue experiences abroad during summer or other break periods that they find on their own but do not convey academic credit. Independent travel cannot be used to study abroad in a credit-bearing study abroad program that is not approved by UVM. For more details, please see OIE’s page on independent travel.

Choosing Courses to Take Abroad
Use your Degree Audit to learn your degree requirements and plan out your remaining coursework.
Meet with a GSB advisor to discuss when and which courses to take abroad.
Check how the courses you take abroad may count towards your degree requirements using the UVM Transfer Credit Guide. If a course isn’t listed, it hasn’t been reviewed recently but could still transfer. Email the course syllabus to GSB Center for Student Success (gsbcss@uvm.edu) for review.
AP credits, dual enrollment credits, and/or taking summer courses can free students up to have more flexibility when abroad.
Transferring credits to UVM
You must meet with an advisor in advance of going abroad to ensure that the credits you intend to transfer back to UVM will meet your business major requirements.
You must earn your host university/program’s grade equivalent of a C or better for the course to count for credit.
The grades earned in courses you take abroad will not count towards your cumulative GPA at UVM.
You can to transfer up to the following courses/credits to UVM, including any credits you transfer from domestic institutions:
Business Field: 2 courses (6 credits)
All Concentrations (Finance, Accounting, Marketing, and Business Analytics): 2 courses (6 credits)
Entrepreneurship Theme: 2 courses (6 credits)
Sustainable Business Theme: 2 courses (6 credits)
Global Business Theme: 3 courses (9 credits)
Business co-major: 1 course in Business Field; 1 course in Interdisciplinary Theme and Concentration
Business minor: 2 courses
