General Lab Safety Practices
Safety is a core component of laboratory work, not a barrier to it. Every laboratory professional is responsible for conducting research in a manner that protects themselves, their colleagues, and the shared workspace. This requires identifying and understanding all hazards associated with laboratory activities before starting work. A safe campus environment is a right of all employees and all those involved in education and research.
There is no substitute for being prepared. Familiarize yourself with the hazards of the work you are doing, what to do in the case of an emergency, and the controls that you can implement to reduce, or even eliminate risks in your procedures.
General lab safety practices focus on the day to day actions that reduce risk in laboratory spaces. This includes maintaining good housekeeping, preventing slips and trips, avoiding food and drink in labs, using shared spaces responsibly, and ensuring proper ventilation and storage of materials.
