Pre-Matriculation Requirements

To enroll at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, all students must complete the pre-matriculation requirements listed below using the interactive requirements checklist in the Application Portal (AMP).

Admitted Students

All items are due no later than July 1*. However, it is strongly recommended that you begin the immunization documentation as soon as possible because often additional actions are needed on your part before your status is considered in compliance.

* For students admitted after July 1, submit all requirements within 30 days of acceptance.

Immunization

Body

Review Immunization Requirements & Submit Proof of Immunization (PDF)

You must provide immunization documentation for and/or immunity from communicable diseases and comply with all Larner College of Medicine requirements for working in a healthcare environment as outlined in the Medical Student Handbook Policy 670.10: Immunizations and Other Health Information. This policy has been revised as of June 18, 2024.

All immunization documentation should be uploaded to CastleBranch. CastleBranch will review the submitted records to determine the status of compliance.

Once you are compliant, the Office of Medical Student Admissions will mark this Pre-Matriculation Checklist requirement complete.

Why is this Required?

In compliance with the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) recommended vaccination for healthcare providers, these requirements are designed to protect patients and students alike. Because students interact with their first patient on the first day of enrollment at the Larner College of Medicine, it is essential that this requirement be fulfilled prior to arrival on campus.

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the US Department of Education-recognized authority for the accreditation of medical education programs leading to the MD degree, also mandates that all medical schools follow accepted guidelines in determining immunization requirements for their medical students.

Moreover, according to a 2005 study, The prediction of professional behaviour by David Stern et al., a student's ability to meet immunization requirements can provide the university with a context-bound outcome to begin measuring student professionalism.

Background Check

Body

Larner College of Medicine participates in the AMCAS-sponsored background check. Certiphi Screening, Inc. will conduct a background check for accepted applicants beginning in January of the matriculation year.

You’ll receive an email at your AMCAS-listed address to provide consent. Once the report is ready, you’ll have 10 calendar days to review and dispute it before it’s made available to the participating medical school(s) that offered an acceptance and initiated the request for this report. If you don’t respond, it will be released automatically after 10 days.

The report procured during this process will only be released to medical schools requesting this report. On the report, history including infractions and juvenile records will be displayed to the applicant, but medical schools vary on the content they can and will view.

This Pre-Matriculation Checklist item will be completed by the Office of Medical Student Admissions after verifying your report and confirming successful completion of the background check.

Why is this Required?

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommends that all U.S. medical schools procure a national criminal background check on applicants upon their conditional acceptance to medical school. This is to ascertain the ability of accepted applicants to eventually become licensed physicians in the future, enhance the safety and well-being of patients, and to ensure the public's continuing trust in the medical profession.

Technical Standards

Body

You must affirm that you can meet the Larner College of Medicine Technical Standards for Admissions, Advancement, and Graduation, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Why is this Required?

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) mandates that all medical schools develop and publish technical standards for the admission, retention, and graduation of applicants or medical students with disabilities, in accordance with legal requirements. Medical Student Handbook  Policy 300.00: Technical Standards for Admission, Advancement, and Graduation states, "minimum technical standards must be met for admission, advancement and graduation"; thus, all entering students must be familiar with the Larner College of Medicine's technical standards

Disability Services at UVM Student Accessibility Services (SAS) provides accommodations, consultation, collaboration, and educational support services to students with documented disabilities. Please visit the Larner College of Medicine Medical Student Handbook Policy 300.00 Technical Standards for Admission, Advancement, and Graduation, and  Policy 310.00 Support for Disabilities: Technical Standards Procedure for Students with Disabilities Seeking Accommodation for more information on seeking reasonable accommodation.

If you indicate needing accommodation(s), you will be connected to SAS via email. They will work with you to confirm accommodation eligibility and ensure that accommodations are in place prior to the start of medical school.

Please note that nothing precludes you from requesting accommodation at any time, including after the start of medical school.

Student Handbook

Body

Review and familiarize yourself with all sections of the Larner College of Medicine Medical Student Handbook

Be advised that students are required to have access to personal transportation during all levels of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum (VIC). All students must have a valid United States driver’s license and have access to an insured, working vehicle to meet this requirement.

You must agree to abide by the Medical Student Handbook and attest to this agreement in the Pre-Matriculation Checklist within the Application Portal (AMP).

Why is this Required?

The University of Vermont established specific requirements for all members of the University community. These University policies connect the University's mission to individual conduct, institutionalize impartial expectations, support compliance with laws and regulations, mitigate institutional risk, and enhance productivity and efficiency in university operations. The Larner College of Medicine Student Handbook contains the policies, guidelines, and rules & regulations that govern the expected roles and responsibilities of each student.

Submit proof of health insurance using the Online Insurance Waiver/Decision Form

You must attest to the completion of this requirement in the Pre-Matriculation Checklist within the Application Portal (AMP).

Why is this Required?

The University of Vermont requires all medical students to have health insurance. The purpose of this University policy is to ensure that all full-time UVM students are sufficiently covered by health insurance in case of illness or injury and to make sure they do not suffer financial hardship due to inadequate/nonexistent coverage. Additionally, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) mandates that all medical schools ensure that health insurance is available to each medical student and their dependents.

You must specify insurance beneficiary information in the Pre-Matriculation Checklist within the Application Portal (AMP).

Why is this Required?

To read more about the Larner College of Medicine disability insurance, including a summary of benefits, please review the Medical Student Handbook Policy 840.00: Disability Insurance. This requirement may not be waived, even if you have additional coverage.

Additionally, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) mandates that all medical schools ensure that each medical student has access to disability insurance.

Official Transcripts

Body

Incoming students must have completed all ongoing degrees/required coursework by the time of matriculation. Official transcripts showing the completion of degrees, incomplete at the time of application, must be submitted to lcom.admissions@med.uvm.edu.

No action is required if you did not have ongoing coursework/degree(s) at the time of application.

This Pre-Matriculation Checklist item will be completed by the Office of Medical Student Admissions after verifying transcripts.

Why is this Required?

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) mandates that all medical schools ensure that any student accepted for admission demonstrates academic achievements, completion of relevant prior coursework, and other relevant characteristics comparable to those of the medical students in the class that they join.

Additionally, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) guidelines state that transcripts from previously attended institutions are a necessary component of a student's academic record.

JumpStart VIC

Body

JumpStart VIC is designed to prepare incoming medical students for success. The program offers opportunities to identify and address gaps in basic science knowledge, engage in active learning, and begin building a supportive community. It also helps students explore effective strategies for navigating the transition to medical school.

Participation is strongly encouraged, especially in person whenever possible, to make the most of the collaborative and immersive learning experience. However, regardless of how—or if—you choose to participate (in person, synchronously online, or asynchronously), all students will have access to the full set of course materials.

JumpStart VIC is open to all matriculating students at no additional cost. You must be CTE in the Choose Your Medical School (CYMS) portal to register.

Why is this Required?

While participation in JumpStart VIC is optional, completing this Pre-Matriculation Checklist item is required. Knowing if and how you plan to participate allows us to effectively plan for this program and your arrival.

OASIS Update

Body

The Larner College of Medicine employs the Online Access to Student Information and Scheduling (OASIS) student information system. OASIS gives administrators, students, and faculty 24/7 access to student, course, and schedule information.

Once granted access to OASIS, please confirm that you have reviewed and/or provided the following:

  • Accurate information about your hometown/state and previous degrees

  • The pronunciation of your name

  • Your M#/user account from UVM Medical Center (UVMMC), if you were ever issued one

  • Any dietary restrictions and relevant food allergy details to assist our event planners

Why is this Required?

The Office of Medical Student Education endeavors to avoid making public errors when your name is announced during ceremonies at the Larner College of Medicine, beginning with the White Coat Celebration, in the first year. In addition to being listed in various ceremony programs (such as Commencement), your hometown/state/country is used by the University to report aggregate data, as required by federal, state, and accreditation agencies.

Finally, all incoming students are issued UVM Medical Center credentials to access the Patient Record and Information Systems Management (PRISM) software during the first month of the curriculum. We request details about previously issued credentials because it is important from the account management standpoint of the Internet Security Team at the Medical Center to avoid creating duplicate accounts.

myUVM Update

Body

myUVM is the University of Vermont’s secure online student portal. It serves as the central hub for managing academic, financial, and personal information.

You must attest to the completion of the following items in the Pre-Matriculation Checklist within the Application Portal (AMP):

  • Log in to your myUVM account and confirm that your contact information is accurate for CatAlert, the University’s emergency notification system

  • Review your directory information privacy settings. If you would like any of your information to remain confidential, file a request with the UVM Registrar's Office, either in person or using the confidentiality form accessible via your myUVM portal

  • Optional - Update your lived name and/or pronouns by logging into your University Directory account. Note: Some systems will reflect changes immediately, while others may take up to 24 hours

Why is this Required?

Keeping your myUVM account up to date is essential for your safety and privacy.

Step-By-Step Procedure to Update Your Contact Information in myUVM.

CatAlert, the University’s emergency notification system, relies on the contact information in your myUVM account to quickly reach you in the event of a campus emergency. Although CatAlert is managed outside of the Larner College of Medicine, it is a critical part of our shared safety and operations procedures.

Your myUVM account is also the official source for your directory information and privacy settings. Confirming or updating your information ensures that your preferences—such as confidentiality requests, lived name, and pronouns—are accurately reflected across university systems.

Completing these tasks helps ensure you receive timely alerts and that your personal information is managed according to your wishes.

CATcard

Body

Please activate your UVM Student ID (CATcard) by uploading your photo and enabling your digital CATcard on your personal smartphone(s)/device(s).

Your digital ID will grant any necessary access before classes officially begin. You will eventually require a physical CATcard during your medical education; you can pick this up anytime over the summer during CATcard Office hours or at orientation registration.

Please note that University ID is not official and should not be used in lieu of government-issued identification.

Why is this Required?

CATcard is the identification card at UVM, used by all students, faculty, and staff. It provides access to CAT$cratch (UVM's prepaid debit account), dining, library, fitness facilities, door access, and serves as a bus pass for the local bus system.

A working CATcard is required to pick up your laptop.
