Future physicians,

Thank you for your interest in the Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. As a public institution, in one of the smaller states in our Union, we are proud to be an intellectual and academic destination for students and faculty who are aligned with our mission of service, scholarship, and leadership. Every year, we recruit curious and service-oriented learners to our medical program to walk with us in our mission.

When you visit our campus, you will notice professionalism banners that clearly outline the culture of Larner that we work hard to preserve. Our learning environment is characterized by cultural humility, kindness, and respect that is palpable in every corner and in every interaction. It is with this lens that each community member gives of themselves to those we serve. It is with this lens that we achieve excellence in our stated mission to bring hope and access to patients, both locally and globally, by integrating research and education in the care that we provide.

With our two-campus model we provide both rural and urban clinical learning experiences to our students. Our integrated curriculum is student centered and driven by data based educational pedagogy. Opportunities for research range from bench to clinical and public health. We pride ourselves on supporting our student physicians to reach for their dreams and appreciate their trust in us to guide them in their learning. Our student physicians become physician leaders in healthcare delivery innovation in a variety of academic and clinical settings.

I know application to medical school is arduous and I want you to think of us as your partner in this endeavor, you are not alone. I hope you find our process easy to navigate and, most importantly, one that will allow you to share yourself with us. We evaluate applicants holistically and look for mission alignment between your personal mission and our stated mission; we want you to be here because we both agree that we are the best program for you. I invite you to browse our website to get a better understanding of what we have to offer and reach out to us if you have any questions.

As we embark on seating our next class of compassionate, patient-centered, data-driven and solution-minded students, we look forward to receiving your application!

I wish you all the best and continued success.

To accomplish our mission, the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine (UVMLCOM) admissions procedures ensure that the admissions committee is composed of a diverse and broadly representative cohort of faculty, students, and community members. Each candidate’s file is reviewed using a holistic approach to evaluate applicant attributes in the broader context of their life experiences. These attributes include academic excellence; personal characteristics such as intellectual curiosity, oral communication, ethical responsibility, capacity for improvement, reliability, adaptability, cultural humility, leadership, teamwork, service to others; accomplishments in research; and contribution to diversity (gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio‐economic background, mental and physical abilities, geographic origin). The committee places special emphasis on understanding how each individual applicant’s unique life experience has contributed to the pursuit of their goal of entering the field of medicine. Our process is guided by our values of professionalism, which include integrity, cultural humility, social responsibility, altruism, compassion, accountability, kindness and respect.
