Bachelor's Degree
All students matriculating to The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont must earn a minimum of a bachelor's degree in any discipline from an institution accredited by the National Committee of Regional Accrediting Agencies in the U.S. or Canada.
A degree earned outside of the U.S. will be accepted if accompanied by a translated equivalency to a U.S. degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution. Foreign-earned prerequisites will be accepted if they are found to be equivalent during the translation.
Prerequisite courses may be completed at community colleges, junior colleges, and online coursework. High school advanced placement courses will be accepted only if credit appears on the application's college transcript and the AMCAS transcript portion.
Courses
An applicant's undergraduate studies must include the coursework listed below. We also strongly recommend one course in biochemistry or molecular genetics. If your learning institution has a specific sequence of courses, make a note of this on your secondary application under additional comments.
All required courses must be competed prior to matriculation of the year you plan to matriculate. Official transcripts must be received after the grade is available.
Tests
MCAT
The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is required of all applicants. For the 2024-2025 application cycle, we will accept tests taken between January 1, 2021, and September 30, 2024.
We operate on a rolling admissions basis. It is therefore beneficial for all applicants to submit completed application materials, including MCAT scores, by September 1, 2024.
CASPer
We require all applicants to complete CASPer (Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics). Completion of CASPer is mandatory to receive an invitation to interview. Only the CASPer exam is required.
Letters of Recommendation
The Larner College of Medicine participates in the AMCAS letter writer service and letters must be submitted through the letter writer portal. The letters should critically evaluate your academic ability, strengths, and weaknesses, motivation for medicine, maturity, and special attributes or assets.
We require a committee letter or a letter packet if your college or university provides it. These collective letters count as one letter in AMCAS and meet the entire requirement.
If your school does not have an advisor or committee, you must provide three letters as follows:
- Two letters from professors in the sciences with whom you have taken classes, and
- One letter from a non-science professor with whom you have taken a class.
If you are not able to provide the letters listed above, you may provide three academic or professional letters from people who know you well.
We will accept up to six (6) letters of recommendation from you.
US residency status
We only consider applications from U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, students with DACA status, refugees or asylees.
