New voluntary forest harvesting guidelines were completed and officially adopted last week. Gund Fellow, William Keeton, represented UVM on the advisory and technical committees, lending practical and academic insight especially around biodiversity and wildlife habitat. The guidelines present recommendations for positive actions to protect water quality, soil health, and biodiversity when carrying out a harvest. There are also suggestions for planning for uncertainty.
The development of the guidelines began in 2013 with the passage of Vermont Act 24, which was an amendment to the Vermont Energy Act of 2012. Over the course of 14 months stakeholder from various groups across the state worked together to create voluntary guidelines that support forest health and sustainability in Vermont. As Bill said, “This is a significant step in the right direction for sustainable forestry in Vermont.” The guidelines and more information on the process can be found on the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation website.
