Become a Gund Faculty Fellow

Open each fall semester September 1 – November 1.

• Faculty fellows must be current faculty at UVM who have terminal degrees in their fields.
• The nomination process begins with a short email from a nominator familiar with the Gund Institute or the nominee to the Gund Institute Director of Operations and Programs (julianna.m.white@uvm.edu) and Office Manager (Benjamin.Morgan@uvm.edu).
• Gund staff will send an InfoReady link to the nominee, where they will be asked to submit a CV and a letter of interest by November 1.
• The Gund Institute Faculty Fellow Review Committee, comprising at least three faculty fellows, will review nominee's materials and determine whether to invite  the nominee to give a public research talk. The Committee will use the following criteria: strength of scholarly record, potential to contribute to collaborative scholarship; focus on environmental challenges and solutions; and commitment to meaningful engagement with the Institute and its community.
• Gund staff will work with selected nominees to schedule a public research presentation in the following spring semester.
• The Gund Faculty Fellow Review Committee will attend the talks, review materials, and recommend nominee to the Gund Institute Director by May.
• The Director will make final decisions and notify nominees during the summer months.

• Participate in collaborative research efforts among Gund community members. 

• Compete for Gund Catalyst Awards and ad hoc funding opportunities. 

• Advise or co-advise Gund-funded PhD students and postdocs. 

• Access enrichment funds to support research costs, travel, publication, etc. 

• Access communications support (e.g., media outreach, training). 

• Access partnership and policy expertise. 

• Access resources to support visiting scholars. 

• Help guide Institute direction through Fellows' meetings and retreats. 

• All applicable benefits of Affiliates. 

• Collaborate regularly with other Gund Fellows on interdisciplinary research. 

• Participate and present regularly in Gund seminars and events. 

• Participate in all Faculty Fellows meetings. 

• Serve on standing and ad hoc committees. 

• Publish via open access principles and share Gund-related research papers or reports  with Institute colleagues and staff. 

• Support graduate education (e.g., guest lecturing, mentoring). 

• Participate annually in active learning in creating multicultural community through participation in Gund-sponsored or other activities. 

• Communicate Gund affiliation in websites, emails, publications, social media. 

• Acknowledge Gund financial support in relevant publications. 

• Inform the Gund regarding changes in professional status. 

Faculty fellows are appointed to renewable three-year terms. In the spring of 2025, one-third of faculty fellows (those who have been with the Gund Institute for the longest) will participate in the review and reappointment process. One-third of fellows will participate in this process each year until all faculty fellows are on schedule. The process involves: self-evaluation, including election whether to renew and engage, via survey; survey review and recommendation by the Gund Institute Faculty Fellows Committee to the Director; Director or Gund leadership team follow-up with the fellow.
