College of Arts and Sciences Majors & Minors
College of Arts and Sciences Requirements
Important CAS Degree and Distribution Requirements:
Minimum of 120 credits completed
30 of the last 45 credits applied towards the degree must be completed at UVM
No more than 45 credits in courses with the same departmental prefix can be applied to the 120 credits required for graduation
If major and minor in CAS, a minimum of 96 credits must be earned through CAS courses
If minor is in another college, dual degree, or for certain approved majors, a minimum of 84 credits must be earned through CAS courses
Typically, a maximum of one course can be used to satisfy a requirement for both a major and a minor
In most cases, completing the college requirements will result in completing the Catamount Core Curriculum Requirements as well.
LANGUAGE: 2 courses/at least 6 credits in the same foreign language. Typically, these courses also satisfy the Catamount Core requirements of GC2, OC, and/or WIL2 designations.
Catamount Core Curriculum Requirements
The Catamount Core Curriculum is made up of 42 credits in courses distributed across three main areas: LIBERAL ARTS (21 credits); CORE SKILLS (9 credits); and COMMON GROUND VALUES (12 credits).
Students can take courses that fulfill more than one category, but they must take at least 40 unique credits to fulfill the Catamount Core requirements.
In most cases, completing the CAS Distribution Requirements will result in completing the Catamount Core requirements as well.
Transfer Credit Evaluation Process
Once you have been accepted, you will receive an official transfer credit evaluation in 3-5 business days. A dedicated transfer student advisor in CAS will help you review how your transfer credit has been evaluated and applied towards your degree requirements.
The initial credit evaluation we provide doesn’t have to be set in stone. If you need a more in-depth review for a specific course, we will request that you provide the course syllabus so we can conduct that specific review.
Email cas+trace@uvm.edu to discuss your credit evaluation with a transfer advisor
Transfer Credit Appeals
Your initial Transfer Credit Evaluation is not set in stone. A dedicated CAS transfer student advisor can help you make recommendations for appeals.
If you would like to have a course reviewed for a specific equivalent course or credit in another discipline, send a course syllabus to transfer@uvm.edu for further review.
Include the following relevant information:
The course subject, course number, and course title
What school the course was originally taken at
What discipline and/or course would you like to have this course reviewed for
What level of credit you are seeking (1000, 2000, or 3000)
What Catamount Core Requirement you want the course reviewed for
The course will be re-evaluated, and you will receive an email communicating the final transfer credit decision as soon as the faculty has decided.
Examples:
I would like BIO 101: Basic Biology, from Xavier College, to be reviewed for the equivalent of BIOL 1400: Principles of Biology 1 at UVM.
I would like POLI 205: Honors Political Theory, from Xavier College, to be reviewed as a 2000-level course at UVM.
I would like HUM 100: Perspectives of Humanity, from Xavier College, to be reviewed for the AH3: Humanities Catamount Core requirement.
Using your Degree Audit Tool
Your Degree Audit is a helpful tool to keep track of your degree progress.
Lists and tracks your requirements based on your major/minor.
Tracks completed, in-progress, and requirements you still need.
For new Transfer Students starting in the Fall semester, you will need to run a “What-If” in your degree audit.
Instructions:
Go to your My UVM dashboard, click on the “Degree Works” card, and click “Run a Degree Audit” link
Click the “What-If” button near the top of your audit
Select the current catalogue year
Select your major and/or minor
Press the purple button labeled “Run What-If”
Registering for Classes
If registration is currently open, you can register as soon as you pay your deposit! Registration Schedule. Your class standing is based on completed credits and does not count the credits for courses you are currently enrolled in.
You can register on your own, or a dedicated CAS transfer student advisor can help you register. Helpful information and step-by-step instructions for registration.
New transfer students are highly encouraged to attend their assigned registration advising appointment with an advisor in CAS before the start of their first semester.
Foreign Language Placement Test
If you plan on enrolling in French or Spanish at any level, you must take the free Foreign Language Placement test before enrolling in a class. You must take the test even if you've never formally studied French or Spanish.
If you have studied any other language offered at UVM and want to continue in that language, please enroll in the level you think appropriate, or discuss with your advisor to make sure that you enroll in the appropriate level. If you want to start a new language, please enroll in the 1100-level course for that language.
Math Placement Assessment
UVM requires a free Math Placement Assessment to determine readiness for calculus courses. The assessment is up to 30 questions and generally takes 60 - 90 minutes to complete.
Students who enroll in a calculus course but have not taken the assessment will be automatically disenrolled from the course.
Academic Advising
In the College of Arts and Sciences, every student is assigned at least one academic advisor. CAS assigns two types of advisors: Professional and Faculty.
Professional Advisors are staff who work in Student Services, and whose only role on campus is to advise students. These individuals have wide-ranging knowledge and often function as referral resources, connecting students with the support they need to be successful. Professional advisors will always either know the answer to your question or help you figure out who does!
Faculty Advisors are your professors, as well as advising supports. Your faculty advisor will belong to your chosen field of study and have expertise in that field. They are knowledgeable about resources, opportunities, and can help you begin think about life after graduation.
You can see your advisor’s contact info under the “Advising” tab in your myUVM portal. You can reach out to them at any time with questions, or to request an appointment.
Professional advisors are available to meet with you in person or remotely. Our office is located at 438 College Street.
How to schedule an advising appointment
The easiest way to schedule an appointment is through the Navigate app. Choose the location “College of Arts and Sciences” and look for the appointment reasons “Academic Advising” or “Student Services Advising”. If you can’t find a time that works for you, email CAS@uvm.edu.
