Can I change my major after applying?

Body

Yes. When the semester begins, a new transfer students can change or declare their major, minor, or concentration within CAS by submitting this online form.

If I am accepted into CAS, can I eventually switch to a different college at UVM?

Body

It depends. If you are accepted into the College of Arts and Sciences and would like to transfer to another college at UVM (such as the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences), you will need to contact the other college to confirm if there are specific requirements, application deadlines, or processes to follow. You must also submit this online form.

How long will it take me to graduate?

Body

The answer to this question depends on the number of credits you transfer to UVM and what college and degree requirements your previous coursework satisfies. Before you apply, you can use the Transfer Credit Guide to get a sense of how the courses you took at your previous institution may have transferred to UVM in the past.

Once you are accepted, you can review your Transfer Credit Evaluation to see how your credits have been applied to UVM. You will have access to the Degree Audit tool, which allows you to track how far you are in completing your college and degree requirements. A dedicated CAS transfer student advisor will help you navigate these tools and make recommendations to help you maximize your previous credits at UVM!

Will all my credits transfer to UVM?

Body

Students transferring to UVM are often able to transfer most, if not all, of their previous credits. In general, credit is granted for courses that are:

  • Taken at regionally accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities,

  • Comparable in content to course offerings in disciplines at UVM, and

  • Graded at a level of C or higher (on an A-F scale).

Note: courses with a grade of C- or below will not transfer.

Do I need to save my previous college course syllabi?

Body

Yes! UVM has a history of transferring credits from many institutions, and many courses have already been evaluated for UVM equivalency. If you’ve completed a course for which we haven’t transferred credit in the past, we’ll need a copy of the syllabus to complete an evaluation. It’s a good idea to start collecting those syllabi as early as possible, in case we need them for your credit evaluation.

Can I appeal my transfer credits?

Body

Yes! Your initial Transfer Credit Evaluation is not set in stone. A dedicated CAS transfer student advisor can recommend potential appeals. Requesting an appeal is as simple as uploading your syllabus and sending an email to Transfer Affairs.

Will my grade point average (GPA) transfer to UVM?

Body

No, only your previous credit will transfer. Your GPA is calculated using only grades and credits completed at UVM.

How will I know my class standing? (First year, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior)

Body

A student’s class is determined by the number of academic credits completed and does not count course credits that are still in progress.

Class levels are based on the following completed credits:

  • First year: 0 - 26.9

  • Sophomore: 27.0 – 56.9

  • Junior: 57.0 – 86.9

  • Senior: 87.0 and over

Will I be able to register for the classes I need?

Body

Yes. We recognize the importance of starting strong and on track in your first semester at UVM. We will ensure that students enroll in courses that are essential for a student to graduate on time. The college also “saves” seats in many courses, allowing recent transfer students to register for a “full” class. If registration is currently open, you can register as soon as you pay your deposit!

Do I need to live on campus?

Body

Incoming transfer students who are less than 20 years old on their first day of classes have a housing requirement of 2 semesters and are guaranteed on-campus housing in one of our returner residence halls.

New transfer students who are 20 years or older on their first day of classes do not have a housing requirement and can request, but are not guaranteed, on-campus housing. Students looking for off-campus housing are encouraged to explore our UVM partnership apartment community, University Commons. Students can also explore external affiliate housing or nearby rentals

Will it be hard to meet other students?

Body

Some transfer students may enter UVM feeling like other students have already formed social circles. Our transfer-specific Orientation is a great way to form early connections with students experiencing similar circumstances. Clubs and student organizations are full of people looking to connect, regardless of when they started at UVM. Chat with classmates, sit with someone new, ask about study groups, and exchange contact information with new connections. The Tr.A.C.E. program and our Transfer Student Leaders will provide a foundation of support as you build your community at UVM.
