This event presents a unique opportunity for critical and collective reflection on the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the region’s environmental institutions.
Dorceta Taylor, PhD
- James E. Crowfoot Professor of Environmental Justice, University of Michigan
- Freudenberg Lifetime Achievement Award (Association of Environmental Sciences & Studies)
- Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change
Dr. Taylor is a leading national thinker and do-er in addressing multifaceted questions at the intersection of environmental and social justice. Her many accomplishments include:
- Leadership of the Green 2.0 initiative’s comprehensive report (PDF), which details five decades of diversity efforts within environmental institutions. The report calls attention to the lack of progress in achieving racial and class diversity and discusses implications for the movement’s future. The report has received extensive national publicity in Grist and Philanthropy News Digest, among other media outlets.
- Three widely acclaimed books: The Rise of the American Conservation Movement: Power, Privilege, and Environmental Protection; Toxic Communities: Environmental Racism, Industrial Pollution, and Residential Mobility; and Environment and Social Justice: An International Perspective.
- Leadership of the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, which provides undergraduate students traditionally underrepresented in the conservation field with research and internship experiences at environmental organizations.
Following the March 25 talk, please join us for an informal conversation with Dr. Taylor and other attendees, along with a book raffle and signing opportunities. We hope this event is only the beginning of long-lasting conversations about how we can continue to improve our efforts.
