Incorporating Career Readiness

ACADEMIC ADVISING

  • During semesterly advisor meetings is a key time to ask your advisees about their career readiness progress!  Click HERE for sample questions to ask your advisees.

  • Another great advisee tool is the The CEMS Career Roadmap to Success  designed to help students develop academic and career goals, beginning in their first year at UVM. It's a comprehensive tool you can use to engage students in high impact practices that support learning and integrate career development into your work with students in the classroom or in advising. During your advisor session, head to the roadmap webpage with the student to discuss where they are at in the roadmap, and set goals for the next semester.

  • Talk to your students about career courses including CEMS 190/290: Internship, ME299: Cooperative Education, SINT 190: Internship, or CS 293: Computing Career Preperation.

  • Having these conversations does not mean you need all the answers. Refer students to the Career Readiness Program for in depth conversations in drop in hours or 1:1 meetings.

Career Curriculum & Your Courses

Here are some ways you can integrate the plan into your courses:

  • Collaborate with the Career Center or the CEMS Career Readiness Program Coordinator to guest lecture on present discipline specific career topics

  • Host guest lectures or panels from industry professionals or student organizations. Want assistance coordinating them? Reach out for the Career Readiness Coordinator!

  • Utilize the Career Centers Videos, Worshops, & Blackboard Modules

  • Show students the Career Readiness Website and the Career Center’s Blackboard Site

  • Create in class discussions, assignments, or course readings

  • Include skill objectives on student’s syllabus

  • Share upcoming UVM CEMS Career Events during class or through Blackboard announcements (check your email every month for these updates)!

Employer Relations

If you are contacted by an employer about a job or internship, please forward the position and information to holly.fosher@uvm.edu. We like to track out employers on UVM’s Career Database, Handshake, and assist in helping employers post their positions and forward the positions to CEMS students.
If you are interested in getting connected with employers, please reach out to the Coordinator who will be happy to share any connections with you to strengthen our relationships!

FOR PERSONAIZED ASSISTANCE
