Program Overview

The Cancer Research Trainee Exchange is a professional development initiative designed to enrich the experience of emerging scholars in the field of cancer research. This program facilitates cross-institutional collaboration by enabling trainees to visit a partnering cancer center, where they will present their research, engage in scientific dialogue, and build professional networks.

Program Objectives

  • Skill Development: Enhance participants’ presentation and communication skills in a professional setting, preparing them for future academic and clinical responsibilities.
  • Knowledge Exchange: Provide participants with the platform to present their research findings through seminar presentations, promoting academic dialogue and cross-institutional collaboration.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Create meaningful connections among emerging scholars, faculty, and industry leaders, fostering potential collaborations and mentorship for future job success.

Program Structure

University of Wisconsin Site Visit

The selected trainee will take part in a structured one-day visit during the Cancer Trainee Research Symposium on September 24, 2025. Activities include:

  • Social dinner with members of the Cancer Trainee Network leadership team
  • Optional attendance at Oncology Grand Rounds (speaker TBA)
  • Delivery of a 30-minute presentation of your work as part of the keynote
  • Flash talk competition
  • Networking lunch
  • Breakout workshops on professional development topics such as grant writing and elevator pitches (topics TBA)
  • Individual networking and collaboration meetings with faculty and researchers in relevant areas of study

University of Vermont Site Visit
A selected trainee will engage in a one-day, personalized visit tailored to their individual research interests and career goals. Activities may include:

  • Attending and/or presenting at a meeting of one of the Cancer Center programs (Cancer Cell, Cancer Host and Environment, Population Sciences and Cancer Outcomes
  • Participation in a trainee networking lunch
  • Small group meetings with labs of complimentary research focus
  • Tours of research core facilities (advanced microscopy, advanced genomes technologies core, proteomics)
  • One-on-one collaborative meetings with faculty scientists
  • Attendance at a trans-disciplinary team meeting (TDT) or Grand Rounds (optional)

Logistics
All travel-related expenses will be fully covered by the hosting cancer centers. This includes transportation, hotel accommodation, local transit, and most meals during the visit.

34th Annual Short Course on Experimental Models of Human Cancer

Body

UVM Cancer Center trainees were invited to participate in a nine-day course hosted by The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. This program featured expert-led seminars and hands-on workshops covering topics such as tumor biology, PDX models, computational genetics, immunotherapy, and health disparities. All registration and housing costs were fully supported by the UVM Cancer Center and The Jackson Laboratory. 

UVMCC Postdoctoral Research Excellence Award

Body

This competitive, merit-based award was designed to recognize and support outstanding postdoctoral fellows engaged in cancer-related research. The award provided $10,000 per year for three years (totaling $30,000), to be used at the fellow’s discretion in support of their research, training, or professional development. Funding may be used for supplies, travel, conference attendance, training opportunities, or other expenses that advance the fellow’s research and career trajectory. Award recipients are required to submit an annual one-page report detailing how the funds were used to support their training and/or career development.
