Speaker Nominations

We encourage all UVMCC community members to submit speaker nominations for the CroSSTOC seminar series. Nominations should focus on speakers who can engage a diverse audience, bridging both foundational science and clinical care, and offering a range of perspectives. Whether your nominee specializes in fundamental cancer biology, population sciences, or clinical research, we are looking for individuals who will foster collaboration and inspire meaningful discussions across disciplines. See below for more details regarding nominations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who can nominate a CroSSTOC speaker?

Body

If you’re a member of the UVM Cancer Center – at any level – you can nominate a speaker. Nominations from trainees are strongly encouraged, as are collaborative nominations (e.g. CPS and CC co-inviting a population scientist focusing on molecular epidemiology; CHE and COE co-inviting a clinical oncologist to present outreach efforts that educate and recruit patients to enhance immunotherapy trials).

What attributes should I consider for a prospective CroSSTOC speaker?

Body

The key to having this series be a success is to maximize the benefit of the seminars for as wide a variety of members as possible – hence the acronym CroSSTOC. We hope to build the series audience to routinely include clinicians, fundamental and population scientists, and trainees from all three UVMCC Programs, as well as our Affiliate and Clinical Members. Thus, we suggest that you consider the following key attributes for potential invited speakers to ensure that each session is engaging, impactful, and rewarding:

  • Ability to engage across learning levels (i.e. trainees through senior faculty)
  • Ability to engage across foundational science/clinical care spectrum
  • Ability to engage across fields/programs (i.e. to all/more than one UVMCC program/component)
  • Represents/manifests diversity of experience, culture, or background
  • Gives a great talk, of course

We hope that these suggestions will help guide your nominations and help us create a seminar series that is engaging, enriching, and inspiring for all UVMCC Members.

I’ve nominated a speaker – what happens now?

Body

Your work isn’t done! While CRTEC will manage scheduling, the nominating member will be expected to host the speaker. This includes introducing them, joining them for off-campus meals, and supplying a list of names of other UVMCC members or UVM faculty for one-on-one or small group meetings.

As nominations arrive, a committee comprising the Associate Director of CRTEC and representatives from UVMCC Research Programs, Components, and Clinical Members will review them and prioritize potential speakers. CRTEC Staff will send invitations and, once an invitation is accepted, will arrange travel and lodging and work with you (as well as Program Leaders, Component Directors, and Administrative Staff) to finalize the speaker’s itinerary (including meetings and meals).
