University of Vermont Cancer Center Pilot Project
Request for Proposals - Pilot & Pre-Pilot Grants
Calendar Year 2025
The UVM Cancer Center (UVMCC) will provide funds for Pilot grants to support new projects for Cancer Center members. The criteria that will be evaluated for funding are as follow:
- Quality of the science of the proposal (50%)
- Potential that the project will lead to success in future applications for significant extramural funding and impactful peer-reviewed publications (25%)
- Inter-programmatic proposal, use of shared resources (25%)
Eligibility
- Cancer Center Full, Associate, Core Clinical, or Clinical Members
- Must be a project not supported by existing extra- or intra-mural grant funding
- No Cancer Center pilot grant funding within the past two years
Funding
- Up to two Pilot grants can be awarded for this cycle, each at up to $50,000.
- Up to three Pre-Pilot grants at up to $15,000 each can also be awarded for proposals describing an innovative idea, with minimal or no preliminary data. These Pre-Pilot awards provide a limited amount of seed money to generate preliminary data to support a future pilot award or small R03 type grant and are most appropriate for Clinical/Translational and Population Science projects, or any projects aiming to generate preliminary data for an extramural grant application.
Specifics
- Applications will be due by Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024 at 11:59 pm via https://uvm.infoready4.com/#competitionDetail/1943079
- Proposals will be reviewed by the UVMCC Pilot Grant Review Committee.
- Notification of projects selected for funding will be made in November 2024.
- The PI from each of the projects selected for funding will be asked to make a presentation describing their project at the Fall 2025 Cancer Center scientific retreat.
- Pilot grant funding will start January 1, 2025. Projects requiring IRB approvals may apply for a two-year funding period; otherwise, funds from all other grants must be utilized within one year of award. Unexpended funds will require approval from the Director for carry over.
- Funds may be utilized for research personnel salary, supplies and other research-related expenditures. Funds may not be utilized for PI salary support. Travel support is permitted only for presentation of the research conducted under the grant at scientific meetings and is limited to one trip (if allowable under UVM COVID guidelines). Please see Program Guidelines for more information on allowable expenses.
- Individual faculty may participate in only one Pilot grant submission.
- A one-page progress report is required at the end of the project period. Failure to provide a progress report will result in each PI being ineligible for future Pilot grant support.

UVM Cancer Center Summer Student Fellowships in Cancer Research
General Information
Application process for 2024 has closed. Please check back in Spring 2025 for information on Summer 2025 program.
The UVM Cancer Center is supporting Summer Student Fellowships in Cancer Research. Under this program students will receive a stipend of $3,000 for cancer-related basic, clinical/translational, or population science research conducted over an 8-12 week period under the mentorship of a UVM Cancer Center Full, Associate, Clinical or Core Clinical Member (see directory of Cancer Center membership at: http://www.med.uvm.edu/vtcancercenter/about/memberdirectory)
Eligibility
Eligible candidates are medical students, nursing students and graduate students in LCOM, CNHS or the UVM Graduate College (masters or doctoral levels). Students with alternative salary or stipend support for the summer are not eligible for this program.
Application Details
An application should be submitted jointly by the student and mentor and should include the following:
- Brief description of the proposed research project (one page)
- Description of the student’s current position, qualifications, role in the project and how participation will further the student’s career goals (no more than one page)
- Mentor’s NIH style biosketch

Mentor Information
Students wishing to participate who need assistance in identifying a mentor should contact one of the research program leaders for guidance.
Each mentor may submit only one application. Similarly, each student may submit only one application. Funding is available for up to 13 projects for the summer of 2022.
Each mentor of a funded proposal will receive $1000 for project related expenses.
