We’re excited to introduce three outstanding physicians who have recently joined the University of Vermont Cancer Center. Each brings unique expertise, a passion for patient-centered care and a commitment to making treatment accessible and compassionate. Let’s get to know them a little better!

Alex Lukez, MD

Specialty: Radiation Oncology
Degrees: Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
Working at: UVM Medical Center & Central Vermont Medical Center
Coming from: Fox Chase Cancer Center | Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Lukez is thrilled to join the UVM Cancer Center because it offers the chance to deliver high-quality care in a collaborative academic environment. He says he finds the most rewarding part of radiation oncology to be guiding patients through their treatment options and helping them understand how radiation fits into their overall care plan. His goal? To ensure patients feel informed, supported and empowered to make decisions.

Dr. Lukez treats a variety of cancers, with a particular focus on prostate and lung cancers. He participates in multidisciplinary clinics, emphasizing teamwork and aligning treatment plans with each patient’s values and goals. His research with us centers on improving quality of life and minimizing side effects of radiation treatment – because care isn’t just about outcomes, it’s about how patients feel along the way.

When he’s not in the clinic, you’ll likely find Dr. Lukez outdoors, hiking, skiing and soaking in the natural beauty of the region.

Roslyn Romanowski, MD

Specialty: Hematology & Oncology
Degrees: Doctor of Medicine with Thesis Honors, Bachelor of Science
Working at: CVPH
Coming from: Buffalo VA Medical Center | Buffalo, NY

Dr. Romanowski is passionate about providing excellent oncology care in a community setting, ensuring patients don’t have to travel for hours to receive the best possible treatment. As an attending physician in hematology and oncology, she says she enjoys the variety that comes with practicing general oncology and values the opportunity to combine her interest in people with her passion for science.

“I thrive on being a lifelong learner, and I love working in a team setting – because cancer care is always better when it’s collaborative,” -- Dr. Romanowski.

She shares that outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her children and their pets: two dogs and two cats. She also loves being outdoors in this beautiful region.

Ryan Thomas, MD

Specialty: Hematology & Oncology
Degrees: Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Business Administration
Working at: UVM Medical Center
Coming from: Internal Medicine Residency at UVM | Burlington, VT

Dr. Thomas was drawn to the UVM Cancer Center for its strong sense of community and dedication to combining cutting-edge care with genuine human connection. “It’s a place where people care about their work and about each other,” he says – and that’s exactly the environment he wanted to be part of.

In his free time, Dr. Thomas enjoys playing and watching basketball, which he believes is a great way to stay active and have fun.

We’re proud to welcome these physicians to our team. Their expertise and compassion help ensure that patients across Vermont and northern New York receive world-class cancer care close to home. Whether you’re meeting them for the first time or seeing a familiar face, we hope this helps you feel more connected to the people providing your care.
