Generalists Division

The Generalist’s division is a group of academic obstetrician-gynecologists, midwives, and nurse practitioners who provide a broad spectrum of clinical services for women.

Education

Body

As academic physicians, we are committed to training future physicians with a strong foundation in women's health. We provide daily instruction to Obstetrics and Gynecology residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings, emphasizing evidence-based care and core competencies: medical knowledge, practice-based learning, communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

Research

Body

All members of the Generalist division participate in research by mentoring students and residents in specific research projects. Three laboratory-based physician-scientists are in the Generalist division. Physician-scientists are both clinicians and researchers who seek to advance the field of women’s health through primary investigations. Our areas of focus are the physiology of preterm labor, immunology of pregnancy, and regulation of gene expression.

Patient Care

Body

University Obstetrics and Midwifery (UOM) includes both Certified Nurse Midwifery and Medical Doctor services, providing high-quality, family-centered obstetrical care. Patients can choose midwifery, physician, or combined care, with access to comprehensive genetic counseling for couples with genetic conditions.

At the UVM Medical Center's gynecology department, we offer extensive inpatient and outpatient services, including annual exams, Pap smears, contraception, menopause evaluations, and specialized care in gynecology ultrasound and abnormal Pap results. Our inpatient focus is on minimally invasive surgical procedures for non-cancer conditions, emphasizing medical management to reduce the need for surgery.
