Gynecologic Oncology
Overview
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology offers comprehensive specialized care for women with pre-invasive and invasive malignancies involving the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina or vulva.
GynOnc Education
We are actively involved in medical student and resident education through medical student clerkships from within The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University of Vermont as well as outside institutions, and a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology, respectively.
GynOnc Research
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is an active member of the NRG, a nationally recognized cooperative research group which offers new and/or investigational treatment protocols for cancer patients.
The Division also collaborates with the Department of Pharmacology and the Department of Immunology at the The Larner College of Medicine in the study of angiogenesis and cytokine production in ovarian cancer.
GynOnc Patient Care
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology offers comprehensive and compassionate care for women. Our services include:
- Evaluation of invasive gynecologic cancers.
- Screening examinations for cancer (Pap smears, colposcopy, and endometrial biopsies).
- Surgical treatment (ranging from minimally invasive surgery such as laparoscopy, to radical cancer surgery).
- Administration of chemotherapy.
To ensure that our patients receive the best possible care, the Division of Gynecologic Oncology works with other members of the University of Vermont Cancer Center such as Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, and the Breast Care Center. Outpatient care is also closely followed not only by the attending physician but also dedicated registered nurses in gynecologic oncology.
Maternal Fetal Medicine
Overview
The Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Division of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences includes MFM subspecialty board-certified faculty members.
MFM Education
With an active Ph.D.-supported research program, a 4-year residency in OBGYN, and University of Vermont medical student clerkships along with visiting medical students from other universities, we are actively involved in the education of the future leaders of our field.
The fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine has one fellow position available for each of three years. The fellowship is committed to a high-quality mentored research experience either within or in affiliation with the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences examining the basic mechanisms and pathophysiology of disorders of pregnancy.
MFM Research
The Maternal Fetal Medicine faculty pursue diverse research interests central to maternal and fetal health, supported by external funding. Key focus areas include quality assessment, outcomes research via Vermont Children’s and Infants Program (VCHIP), and hypothesis-driven basic science research on vascular adaptation related to fetal growth restriction and preeclampsia, as well as cellular mechanisms linked to myometrial growth and preterm delivery risk. Ongoing studies also examine the impact of obesity on pregnancy outcomes and changes in coagulation during pregnancy.
Collaboration with the Reproductive Investigation division, led by Dr. Elizabeth Bonney, includes monthly joint meetings and coordinated research priorities. Partnerships have also been established with the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine, Neurology, and Pharmacology at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine.
MFM Patient Care
The clinical services of the Maternal Fetal Medicine division are provided through the Obstetrics, Midwifery, Gynecology and Reproductive Health Care Service at The University of Vermont Health Network.
Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Overview
Reproductive Endocrinologists are trained to manage complex problems relating to reproductive endocrinology and infertility including hormonal imbalances, menopause, menstrual disturbances, problems with sexual development and function, Mullerian anomalies, infertility, and pregnancy loss.
REI Education
The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility educates medical students and OBGYN residents, offering a senior selective involving surgery, gynecologic ultrasound, and hands-on learning with faculty. Resident physicians participate in two 2-month rotations during their training, acquiring skills in laparoscopic surgery, reproductive technologies, and pediatric gynecology.
Dr. Erica Bove, the Fellowship Director, oversees the fellowship program in Reproductive Endocrinology. This program is noted for its diversity and excellence, providing clinical education in all areas of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and extensive basic science and clinical research opportunities. Fellows act a junior members of the faculty, educating medical students and residents, and are actively involved in didactics, clinical meetings, IVF conferences, and grand rounds. Information on the fellowship program can be obtained by calling (802) 847-3450.
REI Research
The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility conducts clinical and basic research, participating in NIH-funded clinical trials focused on ovulation induction for PCOS and unexplained infertility. REI Fellows engage in research with various mentors. Support for this research comes from NIH, AHRQ, ASRM, and other sources. Referral of subjects and interest in research programs are encouraged; please contact an REI faculty member or Suzanne Dunbar at 802-847-3450.
REI Patient Care
Clinical expertise in all areas of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility are offered by the physicians in our Division, including care of women with menopausal issues, endoscopic surgery, microsurgery, advanced gynecologic ultrasound, hormonal disorders, hirsuitism, infertility, pubertal disorders, fibroids, endometriosis and pelvic pain, premenstrual syndrome, recurrent pregnancy loss, and advance reproductive technologies/IVF. We welcome providers to reach any of the Reproductive Endocrinologists by contacting the provider access service at The University of Vermont Medical Center. Patient appointments are available by calling (802) 847-1400.
Reproductive Science
Overview
The Division of Reproductive Sciences is involved in a number of research projects in the areas of pregnancy-induced hemodynamic and vascular adaptations and maternal-fetal immunology. Our research is largely supported by extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health.
Reproductive Science Education
The Division of Reproductive Investigation provides the unique opportunity for physicians and scientists to collaborate in the study of reproductive medicine. Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows work side by side with clinical fellows to integrate basic and clinical science in all postgraduate training. Opportunities for post-doctoral research are contingent upon funding and availability. Interested parties should direct their inquiries directly to the principal investigator(s) whose area of interest complements their own. Please contact Dr. Elizabeth Bonney for more information about post-doc research opportunities.
Reproductive Science Research
Our Division generates biomedical research on women's health, hosts Fellows from Maternal Fetal Medicine and Reproductive Endocrinology, and provides lab resources. We offer competitive internal funding, encourage student research rotations, and have post-doctoral and graduate student positions available.
Reproductive Science Patient Care
Our department is actively engaged in clinical research and studies are conducted at our affiliate site, The University of Vermont Medical Center. Original investigations are initiated by faculty as well as participation in national Phase III trials. Techniques used include the following: Color Doppler ultrasonography, DEXA scans, abdominal CT scans, euglycemic clamps, activity surveys, laparoscopic ovarian diathermy.
UroGynecology
Overview
The Division of UroGynecology in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences includes two fellowship-trained faculty members.
UroGyn Education
We are actively involved in medical student and resident education through medical student clerkships from within The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at the University as well as outside institutions, and a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology, respectively.
UroGyn Patient Care
