Gender Inclusive Housing

Gender Inclusive Housing Process

What is Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH)?

Body

Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) at the University of Vermont is determined for each room, rather than a designated floor or building. Any floor with either private restrooms or multiple gendered restrooms is designated as mixed-gender, and students of any identity may live on the floor. With the exception of certain areas in Converse Hall, Jeanne Mance, and Harris/Millis, all residence hall floors are mixed-gender, and gender inclusive housing is available in all residence halls and learning communities.

Gender Inclusive Hosuing in the Housing Contract

Body

In the 2026-2027 Housing and Meal Plan Contract, you will select your gender identity and be asked to provide your roommate gender identity preferences (example shown below). These preferences will determine who can select your room during room selection and can be changed until the housing application closes (March 16th for returning students, and May 6th for new students).

Finding Roommates

Body

We strongly encourage you to identify your own roommate within the housing contract. Finding someone that you know you are compatible with in terms of identity is always the best approach to a successful roommate relationship. You can search for a roommate by NetID, roommate profile, or let the housing contract recommend to you a roommate that best matches your roommate profile. To ensure students can find their desired roommate with ease, your roommate preferences will not be considered in the roommate searcher. It is the responsibility of the students to ensure they select a roommate they are compatible with.

A great place to start looking for a roommate is the ZeeMee app! ZeeMee is UVM's official social media community for admitted students. There is a channel specifically for Gender Inclusive Housing Connections.

Room Seletion

Body

Residence hall floors and suites will be classified in 1 of the following 4 categories:

  • Male: these rooms will only be available to students who identify as cisgender male and are either not in a roommate group (going through as an individual), or in a roommate group with another student that identifies as cisgender male.
  • Female: these rooms will only be available to students who identity as cisgender female and are either not in a roommate group (going through as an individual), or in a roommate group with another student that identifies as cisgender female.
  • Neutral: these rooms will only be available to students who do not identify as cisgender and are either not in a roommate group (going through as an individual), or are in a roommate group with another student that does not identify as cisgender.
  • CoEd: these rooms will be available to all students regardless of gender identity. Students in a roommate group with another student that has a different gender identity will likely only see CoEd rooms during room selection.

We encourage students to look into the virtual tours of the rooms they are interested. Please make note of the floor and bathroom as there are different setups within residence halls. Then, you are aware which layout you are most conformable with during room selection. Virtual tours can be found near the bottom of any residence hall building website pages, start looking at Hall Information to find out more.

Room Selection Without a Roommate

Body

During room selection, you will be shown all available rooms for which your gender identity matches the preferences of the student already in the room. After you choose your room, if there is a vacant bed, this bed will only be available to students that match your gender identity preferences.

If you have concerns about living on a mixed-gender floor or suite, please reach out to universityhousing@uvm.edu to discuss room and learning community placement options.
