Dr. Kenneth I. Gross, professor of Mathematics and Education at the University of Vermont, has been named the winner of this year's NES/MAA Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.
Each year, the Northeast Section (NES) of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) presents an award for Distinguished College or University Teaching to a teacher of mathematics at the post-secondary level who has been widely recognized as an extraordinarily successful teacher, whose influence in teaching extends beyond his or her own institution, and who fosters curiosity and generates excitement about mathematics in students.
The NES/MAA was impressed by Dr. Gross's commitment to mathematics education, including his work with:
- minority freshman students at UVM
- high school students through the Vermont High School Summer Enrichment Institute
- adult learners through "Gateways to Mathematics"
- elementary and middle school teachers through the Vermont Mathematics Initiative and the Center for Mathematics Achievement at Lesley College
