High school engineering students from VT and NY will represent the United States at the 7^th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) to be held September 11-19, 2013 in Mysore, India.  During the UVM/GIV Engineering Institute, 113 students were provided the opportunity to study to qualify to represent the U.S. at the 7^th IESO.  (The UVM/GIV Engineering Institute, sponsored by the UVM College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont (GIV), was held June 22-29, 2013.)    The 2013 IESO high school student U.S. representatives are:

These high school students will travel to Mysore, India with mentors Tom and Beth Tailer from Essex, VT, co-directors of the UVM/GIV Engineering Institute, to continue their learning experience as they work with international students on the world’s environmental problems. The focus of the IESO is on sustainability issues such as climate change. 

Student participants from UVM/GIV Engineering Institute have represented the U.S. since its inception in 2007 and have been recognized with bronze and silver medals. The IESO was hosted in 2007 by South Korea, in 2008 by the Philippines, in 2009 by Taiwan, in 2010 by Indonesia, in 2011 by Italy, and in 2012 by Argentina.

The IESO is one of the key activities of the International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO) whose goal is to enhance the quality of geoscience education internationally and to raise awareness of geoscience.  For more information on the 2013 IESO to be held in Mysore, India visit: http://www.ieso2013.in/

UVM/GIV Engineering Institute

The UVM/GIV Engineering Institute provides high school students interested in careers in mathematics, engineering and computer science with hands-on engineering projects related to sustainable engineering practices such as: Renewable/Sustainable Energy, to examine the power and impact of solar, wind and biomass, and conversion of bicycle power to process food; Robotics, to apply artificial intelligence to perform specific tasks; Aerospace Engineering, to create prototype aeronautical devices and atmospheric probes; Civil Engineering, to design trusses related to infrastructure for the world; Electrical Engineering,  to explore how to convert electricity into other practical uses such as sound, light, and motion; Engineering Design, to create solutions for bone femur repair; and Earth Systems Engineering, to examine the impact engineering has on our environment.
