Environmental Engineering senior Joshua Dansie’s Honors thesis to design and build a cold vegetable storage unit in Rodi, Kenya was highly interdisciplinary. His advisor Prof. Zachary Ballard was a Mechanical Engineering faculty and the travel component was aligned with Professors Jane Kolodinsky and Farryl Bertmann’s class in Community Development and Applied Economics and Nutrition and Food Sciences. Rodi is a tiny rural village south of Homa Bay, Kenya. The community is dependent on local vegetable growth and animal care to provide many daily necessities. The installation of a cold storage facility is expected to strengthen the community’s economic output from their agricultural production. Joshua designed a charcoal evaporative cooler and built it using local materials with help from other students from UVM, St. Charles Lwanga and Saint Vinney.
