An Evening with Shoshana Zuboff: Our Digital Democracy in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism

October 14 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free and open (virtually) to the public. We know you value distinctive views on critical American issues and policy. That’s why we hope you’ll join us on Thursday, October 14th at 5 p.m. EST for the virtual 2021 George D. Aiken Lecture Series, featuring scholar, author and activist Shoshana Zuboff.

Our Digital Democracy in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism

Zuboff has dedicated her career to the study of the rise of digital and warns that surveillance capitalism—a term she developed in 2014—is undermining our personal rights and threatening democracy.

According to Zuboff, surveillance capitalism unilaterally claims human experience as free raw material for translation into behavioral data, which are fed into machine intelligence to create behavioral predictions. Those predictions are sold on what Zuboff calls the behavioral futures market.

Zuboff wants us to imagine a digital future where our personal information is back under our control.

Please RSVP at https://learn.uvm.edu/aiken/ so we may reserve your (virtual) seat for this live, free event, on Thursday, October 14th at 5 pm EST.
