First Year Advising

First-year Advising

First-year professional advisors at UVM fill various roles and facilitate the holistic success of incoming College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students. Advisors provide advice and insights around program specific curriculum and pathways. They assist with acquisition of key skills to navigate course registration and degree progress. Additionally, Advisors work diligently to orient and connect students to the extensive UVM community of student service resources.

Through effective communication, a host of workshops, community building events, one-on-one & small group advising our advisors have countless opportunities to engage with their advisees. They answer all questions students bring forward across a wide range of topics including course selection, tutoring support, academic accommodations, adjusting a major, minor or concentration, summer classes, tutoring, study skills, success strategies, health and wellness, study abroad, internship, research, clubs, careers, and more. If we can’t provide the answer, we facilitate connections with UVM staff and faculty best equipped to do so.

Our guiding philosophy is student-centered. First-year students arrive at UVM requiring varying levels of support and guidance.  CALS first year advisors learn who each student is as an individual and have the experience of tailoring approaches to meet specific needs. Our priority is to ensure students feel empowered to thrive and succeed personally and academically, while building a strong foundation of belonging and participation.

First-year advisors help build community for our students by hosting various events throughout the academic year and sharing relevant engagement opportunities across UVM and Vermont.  Whether it is providing information on free events for college students, our favorite place to get a maple creemee, or the location for an amazing weekend hike, we want our students to flourish and feel connected.

The first year of any new experience can have unexpected twists and turns. Your advisor is a reliable, positive guide start to finish.

Here’s what your advisors have to say:

“The best part about advising new students is witnessing a journey of discovery unfold as they begin their education at UVM. My students aspire to do remarkable things in the world and make a difference. The first year is a time of great energy and excitement. As I guide students towards resources and pathways to fulfill their inspiring dreams, I feel responsibility and pride. My job is fun and rewarding every single day!”
