Chiengkuach Majok, Ph.D. Student

I was born in Jonglei, South Sudan, but spent many years in Kenya as a refugee. Got resettled to this beautiful state of Vermont in the fall of 2003. I graduated from UVM in May of 2008, with a BA in economics. Spent about two years working for Fletcher Allen HealthCare (currently, University of Vermont Medical Center), before relocating to Massachusetts, for my MA in International economics and Finance from Brandeis University, graduating in May of 2012.

Over the last few years, I have worked for different companies and organizations. As Economics Governance Specialist for USAID, as Regional Financial Adviser for Deloitte, as Risk & Compliance Manager for Ivory Bank, as Director for Internal Audit at Nile Petroleum Corporation and recently as Financial Reporting Analyst, with International Rescue Committee (IRC).

While these gained experiences at different levels have been valuable, what brought me back to UVM, and specifically to the SDPEG program has a lot to with how this program is structured, combining distinct specialties such as economics, governance and Sustainable development into one. I would be interested in exploring ways on how macroeconomics and monetary policy can contribute to a desirable sustainable development in the developing countries of East Africa. The question of sustainability on many aspects of growth intrigues me immensely and you don’t find it being addressed in many graduate programs.  I am interested in how monetary policy, good governance and sustainable development intersect at the policy levels, resulting in sustainable growth and poverty eradication.
