Barry Simays, MPA Candidate

Born and raised in Johnson, VT, Barry graduated from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst in 1998 with a BS degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering. He then served the City of Burlington for 21 – ½ years with the Burlington Fire Department as a Firefighter/EMT-Intermediate, Senior Firefighter/Advanced EMT, Assistant Fire Marshal, and Battalion Chief/City Fire Marshal. Since his retirement from BFD in early 2021, Barry has served the UVM community as the University Fire Marshal, as liaison to local emergency services, and as a member of the University’s Emergency Operations Group. He is a graduate of the FEMA/USFA National Fire Academy and holds professional credentials with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist and Certified Fire Inspector and as a Certified Fire Investigator with the International Association of Arson Investigators. He has also served with the State of Vermont Hazardous Materials Response Team, as an instructor with the Vermont Fire Academy, and in law enforcement and emergency communications in northern Vermont. Professional interests include fire & life safety code analysis and compliance, fire protection systems, fire prevention education, and emergency management. Outside of work, he is a 38-year volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America having served in numerous positions of leadership at the local, state, regional, and national levels to include fire protection & prevention and emergency management roles at major national events and national camping standards development and assessment. He will begin a two-year term as President of the Green Mountain Council, Boy Scouts of America in 2023, serving youth and adult volunteers throughout the State of Vermont. Barry lives in Colchester with his wife Christine and their two chocolate labs – Chase and Ruby.
