We are all seeing an increasing amount of unwanted junk mail or spam. In
order to help you manage it, UVM is now using the PureMessage spam rating
system. This system attempts to identify spam and mark it so that you can
more easily control it.

6. Whom do I contact with questions or concerns?
Note that this change requires significant updates to UVM e-mail processing systems. Because of the variety of e-mail programs used at UVM, we cannot include detailed instructions for every possible configuration. Please bear with us as we expand Web documentation and help UVMers use these new features.
PureMessage does NOT automatically stop the spam.
It does, however, provide a rating system that you can then use to teach
your e-mail system to separate the messages you want from the ones you
don't.
In summary:
1. What is happening? When?
Beginning June 26, Inbound UVM email is rated from 0-100 based on how closely each message matches common attributes of spam.
2. What will change?
When you receive an e-mail message with a PureMessage spam rating of 50 or higher, you'll see a PureMessage subject line prefix. For example, a spam message sent with the subject line:Subject: Debt Relief is ON THE WAY!
would appear as:Subject: [SPAM?:#####] Debt Relief is ON THE WAY!
3. What do I need to do?
No action is required. We suggest waiting a bit to see how PureMessage rates your email for spam.4. What can I do when I'm ready?
Use UVM's email server filtering (rules) to automatically file probable spam in a spam folder. Email filters can use the spam tag to sort out probable spam at a threshold (50-90) you specify. A user-friendly Web interface with filters for managing spam and other e-mail was put in place on June 26. To access this interface, go to http://webmail.uvm.edu/ and click on "Set up UVM e-mail filtering."
