All About E-Mail at UVM

All University affiliates (students, faculty, and staff) are entitled to a Network ID and an email account with a standard email address.  Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) creates Network IDs, standard email addresses, and email accounts  for all affiliates automatically.  The standard email address is used for all official University email communications.  To use your account and standard email address, you must complete these easy steps:
  1. Activate your Network ID
  2. Choose and configure an email client program
  3. (Optional) Set up mail filtering and forwarding, and vacation notification

If you are in one of the following units, you may have to take additional steps.  Follow the links below for unit-specific email instructions:

Users of these departmental mail servers are encouraged to set the mail forwarding feature for either their standard UVM email address or their departmental address. By doing so, you will be able to receive official University communications addressed to your standard UVM address. For more information on mail forwarding and vacation messages follow the "to-do" links at right.

Activate your Network ID:

You do not have to request a Network ID.  If you are a University affiliate, one has been created for you already.  To activate your account, go to http://www.uvm.edu/account/ and follow the directions at that site.

Choose and configure an email client:

Because people have many different working styles, ETS supports several methods for checking email at UVM:

WebMail
UVM's WebMail is available from any Internet-connected computer in the world - just go to https://webmail.uvm.edu/ in your web browser.  Best of all, WebMail requires no configuration; just go to the site and log in!  Webmail is a secure and easy to use way to check your email from anywhere, but it is not as fast and feature rich as the alternatives.  WebMail requires a web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Thunderbird Mail (Mozilla)
Available for almost every Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating system, Thunderbird is the current leader in Windows Desktop email clients at UVM a feature-rich program.  Thunderbird also works as a news group reader. Apple Mail
Apple Mail is the pre-installed mail package for OS 10.1 and higher.  This version of Apple Mail supports mail filtering and contains a full featured message search engine.  Please note, this is not the same program as the Mail option in Mac OS 9 and lower, which actually launches Outlook Express!

Microsoft Outlook Express
Available for Windows and Macintosh OS 8 and 9, Outlook Express is pre-installed on almost every version of Microsoft Windows, but we recommend updating the program to version 6.0 or later (updates available from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com).  Outlook Express is a friendly and feature-rich program that comes pre-installed with Windows.  You also can use Outlook Express to read news groups.

Note: this is different from Microsoft Outlook, which is only supported by the College of Medicine and the Business School. Microsoft Entourage (which is bundled with Microsoft Office for the Macintosh) has many features similar to Outlook Express for Macintosh. ETS offers support for Entourage only to the extent that its features are the same as those in Outlook Express.

Pine
Pine is available from almost any Internet-connected computer in the world.  Pine is a text-only program (no mouse, text-only menus), but it is very quick, secure, and powerful.  You do not install Pine on your computer, instead you access it though a terminal emulation program.  You will need to download and install an SSH (Secure Shell) program to use Pine on Zoo.uvm.edu.  SSH software is pre-installed on machines purchased through the Depot, or you can download it from ETS's software download site. You also can use Pine to read news groups.

Set up Mail Filtering and Forwarding, and Vacation notification

You can set up filters for your UVM email account.  Filters allow you to have mail sorted into separate boxes based on sender, size, or subject.

You can set up forwarding on your UVM email account.  When forwarding has been set, all mail addressed to your standard UVM email address will be forwarded to a different account.  This is useful if you prefer to use an account on a UVM division's or college's server for your primary email, or if you want another person to receive your mail while you are away.

You can set up Vacation notification to alert those sending mail to you that you are on vacation or otherwise unavailable.
