The upgrade is also being offered well in advance of the end of support for devices running Windows 10, which will stop receiving critical security updates in October 2025. After which, all UVM owned Windows computers must run Windows 11 only.
[*] Please note that the Larner College of Medicine technology services group (COMTS) will be handling computers in their domain separately from ETS.
Upgrade Process
ETS has made the upgrade process as seamless as possible. Starting in early March, staff and faculty will receive notifications in Windows Update on their current Windows 10 devices, prompting them to initiate the upgrade. The upgrade process is straightforward and can be completed in a few simple steps. See the UVM Knowledge Base article linked below under “Self Help” for instructions.
ETS advises that not all computers at UVM are eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11, so if you do not see an upgrade prompt, reach out to your IT support team to request a consultation on the best path forward, which may include replacing the device or other upgrade options.
Support and Training
To assist with the transition, the ETS will provide comprehensive support as well as training resources for Windows 11 use. This includes:
- Migration Support: The Tech Team will be available to answer any questions and aid with the upgrade process. They can be reached via phone at (802) 656-2604, helpline@uvm.edu, or in-person at Ira Allen I-117.
- Self Help: See Windows 10 Support Ending, a UVM Knowledge Base article to help you through the upgrade process
- Online Tutorials: KnowledgeWave, LinkedIn Learning, and Microsoft have online video tutorials and courses to help you get up to speed with Windows 11.
