Burlington--Vermont 4-H dairy members gathered at Maple Valley Jerseys in Enosburg Falls on May 21 for the 2022 State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest.
The 4-H'ers judged three classes of Jerseys (winter calves, winter yearlings and two-year-olds) and one class of spring yearling Holsteins. All competitors provided rankings for each class while the seniors (ages 14 and older) also were required to provide oral reasons for the Holsteins.
Former 4-H'er Elizabeth Menard of Fairfield led a dairy judging workshop prior to the contest and served as the official for the day. Assisting with the event were University of Vermont Extension 4-H livestock educator Wendy Sorrell and UVM Extension 4-H educator Lindy Birch, who recorded scores and placements.
The winners in each age group were:
- Seniors: Jaymie Landon, Hampton, New York (first); Noa Sauve, Colchester (second); Gabriel Michaud, East Hardwick (third); Sadie Ellner, Morristown (fourth); Lincoln Michaud, East Hardwick (fifth); Cassidy Dunphy, Franklin (sixth); Mackenzie Clark, Bomoseen (seventh); Michael Plouffe, Bridport (eighth); Lucy Jerose, Enosburg Falls (ninth); Emma Edenfield, Colchester (tenth)
- Juniors (12-13): Ella McAllister, Morrisville (first); Holden Marcelino, Johnson (second); Eva Bury (third), Olivia Houghton (fourth) and Grace Patenaude (fifth), all from Derby.
- Juniors (10-11): Regan Howrigan, Highgate (first); Bayden McAllister, Morrisville (second); Reegan Kelley, Derby (third); Emmeline Paquet, East Montpelier (fourth)
- Juniors (8-9): Patrick Paquet, East Montpelier (first)
