About Extension | University of Vermont Extension | The University of Vermont(title)

Our Purpose: Cultivate Healthy Communities
Our Mission: Provide and facilitate research, education and outreach with our partners for the people of Vermont

For more than 100 years, University of Vermont (UVM) Extension has delivered education tailored to local needs. Our faculty and staff, located in 12 offices around the state, help improve the quality of life of Vermonters through research-based educational programs and practical information.

UVM Extension integrates higher education, research and outreach to help individuals and communities put knowledge to work in their families and homes, farms, businesses, towns and the natural environment.

This is where we marry technology and social capital to create a true community of learning.  When faculty, farmers and producers all bring their knowledge and understanding to the table, it's pretty magical.

—Professor Vern Grubinger, vegetable and berry specialist, UVM Extension

UVM Extension plans for the future

We challenge our faculty, staff and regional stakeholders to keep improving what defines our value, our importance, and our significance. In our 2018 Strategic Plan, UVM Extension organizes its work around four Result Areas over the next seven to ten years:

  • Result Area 1: Improve the financial, environmental and social sustainability of Vermont’s agriculture, food and forest sectors.
  • Result Area 2: Increase the resilience of families and individuals around health, education and personal and family well-being.
  • Result Area 3: Engage with communities to support leadership development, capacity building and diverse voices in decision making.
  • Result Area 4: Integrate business and conservation to improve the quality of the natural environment where Vermonters live, work and play.
