Matthias Brewer, a professor in the UVM Chemistry Department, was recently awarded a 3-year $500,000 NSF award to study the reactivity of vinyl diazonium ions. This class of compound has not received much attention from the synthetic community and the studies being conducted under this award will enable their use in synthesis. This research will provide new routes to useful molecular scaffolds via carbon-carbon bond formation and ways to control the three-dimensional shape of the molecules being formed will also be investigated. The grant application was based on prior work that was done by former students Sarah Cleary (Ph.D. ’18), Jian Fang (Ph.D. ’20) and Magenta Hensinger (Ph.D. ’21), and current student Evan Howard.
