What is the SI-MBA Program?

Launched in 2014, the Sustainable Innovation Master of Business Administration (SIMBA) is an accelerated, full-time, oneyear MBA program at the University of Vermont’s Grossman School of Business. Offered in person in Burlington, Vermont, SI‑MBA combines rigorous business fundamentals with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. 

Students benefit from personalized career guidance, direct engagement with sustainable business leaders, and a hightouch, collaborative cohort experience. The program prepares graduates to use business as a force for good while building impactful and purpose‑driven careers. What does the curriculum look like?

The SI‑MBA curriculum is modulebased and evenly distributed across the academic year. Courses include: 

  • Sustainable Strategy

The program culminates in a summer Practicum Project, where students apply their learning to real‑world challenges with mission‑aligned organizations. 

What does the schedule look like?

  • Four academic modules across fall and spring 

  • Each module lasts 8 weeks, with 6-7courses per module 

  • Courses meet in 1.5 to 3hour blocks 

  • The summer term is dedicated to the practicum project

Practicum and Careers

How do summer practicum projects work?

Body

During the summer, students work in small teams on a practicum project with a sustainably focused organization. Projects span local, national, and international companies across sectors. 

Students: 

  • Rank their preferred projects 

  • Are matched based on skills, interests, and career goals 

  • Work with globally recognized companies such as Unilever, Beta Technologies, Ben & Jerry’s, Burton Snowboards, and more. 

  • Work on real strategic, operational, or innovation challenges 

Can I propose my own practicum project?

Yes. Students may propose an entrepreneurial venture or independent impact project as their practicum, subject to approval. Several past students have successfully pursued this option. 

What career support do SI‑MBA students receive?

Career coaching is deeply integrated into the SI‑MBA experience. Students receive:

Are there conferences or networking opportunities?

Yes. The program integrates guest speakers and site visits throughout the year. Students also attend industry conferences such as GreenBiz and SeeChange. Each student receives a professional development stipend that can be used for conferences, certifications, travel, and lodging. 

Can I work while enrolled in SI‑MBA?

Due to the intensive, immersive nature of the program, working during the academic year is not recommended. Students who fully engage in coursework, career programming, and community life gain the greatest benefit. 

Admissions and Application

Who can apply?

Body

Anyone with a bachelor’s degree and a strong interest in impact‑oriented business is encouraged to apply. There are no required prerequisite courses

Are there minimum requirements to apply?

Body

Applicants must meet University of Vermont Graduate College requirements and submit all required application materials. Holistic review considers academic preparation, professional experience, leadership potential, and alignment with the program’s mission.

What are the application deadlines and fees?

  • Domestic applications close: July 18, 2026 

  • International applications close: June 22, 2026 

The application fee is $65. Fee waivers are available through the UVM Graduate College for eligible applicants. 

Am I eligible for scholarships?

Yes. Generous meritbased scholarships are available. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early for best consideration.
