This past week, the Grossman School of Business (GSB) at the University of Vermont (UVM) once again transformed Ifshin Hall into a hub of financial wisdom and networking, hosting its highly anticipated 13th annual Careers in Finance event. This year's gathering, held on Friday, March 21, starting with a morning breakfast and running into the early afternoon with a multitude of opportunities, provided a unique platform for UVM students to connect with accomplished alumni and gain invaluable insights into the diverse landscape of the financial world.
The event, masterfully organized by UVM alumnus and Grossman Board of Advisors member James Flicker ’87, CFA Managing Director, TAP Advisors, and Grossman School of Business board member, featured a stellar lineup of alumni panelists, each representing a distinct facet of the finance industry. This year’s panelists included:
- Jill Greer: A seasoned professional with 30 years of non-profit finance experience, including the role of Vice President in Municipal Finance at Goldman, Sachs & Co, and currently serves as the Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee for Connections for the Homeless, a social services agency. She is alsoa proud parent of a GSB graduate.
- David Gringeri '21: An Associate in the Investment Banking Division at Morgan Stanley, specializing in Transportation, Logistics, and Infrastructure.
- Susan Leonard '88: Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer at EastRise Credit Union, bringing over 30 years of experience in the credit union sector.
- Brendan MacKenzie '04: Consultant Relations Manager at Wellington Management, responsible for fostering relationships with investment consulting firms and corporate retirement plan sponsors.
- Daniel Morgan '95: Senior Managing Director at State Street Global Markets, leading the Portfolio Solutions business globally.

The day began with "Wall Street 101" presented by Brendan MacKenzie, and "Wall Street 102" presented by Daniel Morgan. These Wall street seminars offered students a foundational understanding of the complexities and dynamics of the financial markets. Following these insightful lectures, the main panel discussion took center stage, allowing students to engage directly with the alumni and learn from their extensive experience.
The panelists shared their career journeys, offering valuable advice on navigating the challenges and opportunities within the financial industry. Brendan MacKenzie '04 reflected, “While UVM may not be traditionally known as a prime recruitment ground for top-tier finance firms, this reality fosters a uniquely driven student body. Recognizing the importance of building their own networks, UVM students approach events like Careers in Finance with exceptional diligence and determination, a trait that ultimately prepares them for successful and impactful careers.”
They provided anecdotes from their experiences, spanning international business dealings to the realities of early career life, as shared by recent graduates like David Gringeri. Following the panel discussion, the networking lunch, a highly anticipated segment, offered students the chance to connect with the panelists in a smaller group setting.

The Careers in Finance event, beyond its panels, served as a catalyst for students to expand their understanding of the financial landscape and explore diverse career paths. It reinforced the importance of networking and highlighted the potential for UVM graduates to make significant contributions to the finance industry. The event's impact is expected to resonate with attendees, empowering them to pursue their career aspirations with renewed focus and determination. This annual event continues to solidify the GSB's commitment to providing students with unparalleled access to industry leaders and fostering their professional development.
