On November 24, 2025, the University of Vermont and the Grossman School of Business lost one of its most influential leaders. Malcolm Floyd Severance ’49, who passed away at 101, leaves a legacy that shaped the very foundation of business education at UVM.

Dr. Severance attended UVM as an undergraduate and returned in 1953 after earning his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin to join the Department of Economics and Commerce. Over more than three decades—retiring in 1986—he was instrumental in creating a separate Department of Business Administration, now proudly known as the Grossman School of Business. His service extended beyond the classroom: he twice served as a UVM trustee, chaired departments, contributed to the banking industry, and served four terms in the Vermont legislature.

Malcolm’s influence continues today. In 2015, he released a book about the evolution of the business school titled A Pursuit of Excellence: A History of the University of Vermont School of Business Administration. His name also lives on through the Malcolm Severance Graduate Excellence Award, presented annually to a standout SI‑MBA student who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to sustainable business practices.

In recognition of his extraordinary service, Malcolm received UVM’s Distinguished Service Award in 1994. His vision for experiential learning and academic rigor laid the groundwork for the dynamic, innovative school we know today.

“The business school at UVM would not exist without Malcolm’s vision and initiative. I was in touch with Malcolm and visited him until recently. Even though he lived a full life, it is a big loss for us,” said Sanjay Sharma, Dean of the Grossman School of Business.

Memorial donations may be made to the Malcolm and Gladys Severance Graduate Excellence Fund through the UVM Foundation—a fitting tribute to a man who believed in excellence and opportunity.

A memorial service for Malcolm Severance is scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church on St. Paul Street, Burlington, VT.
