On April 24th, 15 members of the University of Vermont Finance and Investment Club traveled to New York City for an immersive day of industry visits, alumni engagement, and firsthand exposure to careers across the financial sector.

The experience provided students with a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with professional practice while strengthening relationships with Grossman School of Business alumni working in some of the industry's most respected organizations.

The day began at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where students witnessed the opening bell from the floor of one of the world's most recognizable financial institutions. Hosted by Peter Tuchman, the group explored the trading floor, learned about the history and evolution of the exchange, and gained insight into the fast-paced environment that continues to shape global markets.

"Standing on the NYSE floor at the opening bell and then sitting down with Grossman alumni who walked us through their actual day-to-day made the whole industry feel a lot more reachable."

Students had the opportunity to see the opening bell, learn about careers on the trading floor, and tour the historically significant building.

From the NYSE, students traveled to Peapack Private, where they were welcomed by Grossman alumnus Robert Plante '82, chief operating officer of the firm. The visit was arranged by alumni Jim Kearney '92 and Robert Plante '82, who have hosted the group for consecutive years, with support from Maria Cunningham and Katy Reed at UVM.

During the session, students learned about wealth management, private banking, and the diverse career paths available within the financial services industry. An extended question-and-answer discussion allowed club members to explore topics ranging from breaking into finance and building professional networks to navigating long-term career growth.

The group's next stop was Morgan Stanley, hosted by Andrew Percoco '17. Gathered high above Midtown Manhattan, students heard from professionals working across investment banking, sales and trading, and equity research, including Grossman alumnus David Gringeri '21. The discussion offered an inside look at the specialized roles that support global financial markets and highlighted the variety of career opportunities available within a leading financial institution.

The day concluded with a coffee chat featuring New York City-based UVM alumni representing a broad range of financial disciplines. For students, the informal setting provided an opportunity to continue conversations, ask candid questions, and hear personal stories about the transition from Grossman School of Business to careers in finance.

"As a former member of the club, it was exciting to see this bright group of UVM students in New York engaging in thoughtful conversations, asking great questions, and demonstrating genuine curiosity and ambition. It's rewarding to see Catamounts supporting one another through a strong alumni network and helping create pathways for future generations of students."

Beyond the visits themselves, the trip highlighted the strength of the Grossman alumni community and its commitment to supporting current students. Through conversations with professionals at every stage of their careers, club members gained valuable perspective on the skills, experiences, and relationships that can help shape their own futures in finance.

As the students returned to Burlington, they brought back more than a deeper understanding of the industry. They returned with expanded professional networks, greater confidence in their career aspirations, and a clearer picture of the opportunities that await them after graduation.
