Activity: Food Web Activity

Summary: Students embody lake organisms to construct an interactive diagram of the Lake Champlain Food Web

Duration: 1/2 hour - 1 hour

Materials: Food Web Organism cards (10 cards/set)

                   2 Spools of string (1 yellow, 1 red)

                   Plastic rings (10 rings)


Lake Ecology

Activity: Plankton Investigation

Summary: Students engage in a hands-on study of lake micro-organisms and food web dynamics by collecting plankton samples and examining/identifying them under microscopes 

Duration: 1 hour - 1 1/2 hour

Materials: 3 Plankton Nets

Lake/Watershed Issues

Activity: Friend or Foe?

Summary: Students will learn the difference between native and non-native species inhabiting Lake Champlain and surrounding basin waters.

Duration: 1/2 hour

Materials: Species Photos (20 cards)

       Species Descriptions (20 cards)

       Native & Non-Native Baskets (2 Baskets)


Lake/Watershed Stewardship

Activity: Best Management Practices Jeopardy

Summary: Students will understand sources of water pollution, how eutrophication occurs, nutrient inputs, and ways to reduce nutrient levels in the lake and surrounding basin waters through Best Management Practices and environmental stewardship. 

Duration: 1/2 hour

Materials: Lake Champlain Basin map & charts
