Research Interests

Raymond (Ray) Schireman completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry, with a concentration in biochemistry, at Southern Oregon University. Ray was drawn to materials research owing to the way in which fundamental physical concepts were applied to a multidisciplinary array of problems related to advanced applications. Ray is currently focusing his efforts on computational materials science, and his project involves the theoretical description of anharmonicity in solid-state density functional theory codes. He is excited to work together with the experimentalists within the Ruggiero Group to achieve a better description of low-frequency dynamics in solids using the algorithms he helps to develop.

Originally from Medford, Oregon, Ray was drawn to Burlington because of the location and opportunities for outdoor activities, in addition to the exciting and highly interdisciplinary work occurring within the Materials Science Program at UVM. When not in the lab, you can find Ray on a mountain, exploring all of the opportunities Vermont has to offer him…and his pup Nala!

Stay tuned for lots of exciting developments from Ray!
