Following a national search, Caylin McCamp has been appointed as the Director of the University of Vermont’s Office of Sustainability.

McCamp has served for 18 months as the Interim Director and has been part of UVM’s Office of Sustainability since 2017 in a variety of key roles. She was also UVM Dining’s first sustainability manager where she built waste reduction and procurement strategies that continue to earn national recognition.

“Caylin’s familiarity with the institution, paired with her applied experience, positions her to meaningfully advance campus sustainability efforts,” said Executive Director of Facilities Management, Amanda Clayton. “She will help anchor the Office of Sustainability with steady direction and cohesion, enabling the team to effectively carry out its role in furthering the university’s mission.”

In her time at the Office of Sustainability, McCamp has led the University’s past four STARS submissions including this year’s, which earned UVM another Gold rating for sustainability. She was instrumental in the development of the Facilities Sustainability Plan, precursor to UVM’s Comprehensive Sustainability Plan (CSP) released in 2023, which McCamp assumes leadership of as Director.

The Campus Sustainability Plan’s headline goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. In addition to decarbonization, goals pertain to operations, governance, people, academics and research. This year’s CSP annual report highlights notable progress across the goals.

As a double alumnus of the Rubenstein school and a participant in UVM’s Sustainability Faculty Fellows program, she is well positioned to carry out the Office’s mission of bridging academics and operations to advance campus sustainability.

McCamp helped launch and is excited to grow the Sustainable Solutions Lab, which hosts problem-based internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. “We put talented students to the task of helping tackle campus sustainability challenges,” says McCamp, “they have a very applied experience, working alongside staff and receiving advisory support from faculty in a relevant field.”

In 2024, McCamp was recognized with the President’s Our Common Ground Staff Award which goes to staff members who best exemplify UVM’s values of respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice, and responsibility.

“I’m deeply committed to advancing sustainability on our campus and am thrilled to be formally stepping into this role,” says McCamp. “It is an honor to do the work I’m passionate about in a place I care so much for and alongside so many others who are working towards our shared goals.”
