Before coming to UVM, Shawn worked as the project manager and restoration biologist for the Friends of the Winooski River, where she developed and managed riparian forest restoration plantings, stormwater management projects, and other water quality and habitat improvement work. She has been an active educator, teaching biology and environmental science courses at Norwich University, Green Mountain College, and St. Catherine University, and providing education and outreach to local communities, landowners, schools, and municipalities. Her interests include restoring functioning natural ecosystems in urban areas, gardening with native plants, and process-based restoration in streams. In her spare time Shawn enjoys good books, exploring the woods, paddling her new blue kayak, pretending to play the violin, and family snowball fights.
